Leeds Akkies Rugby League club will have a new home for the 2010 Co-Operative Rugby League Conference season.
Following months of hard work behind the scenes, the Akkies committee has voted unanimously to become a part of the Old Modernians Association, based in Cookridge, North West Leeds.
By accepting membership of the Old Modernians Association, Leeds Akkies have now effectively become stakeholders rather than tenants for the first time in the club's seven-year history.
Akkies chairman Rob Potts is delighted with the new partnership: "This is absolutely fantastic news, and a just reward for all the hard work behind the scenes at the Akkies and Old Modernians. The magnitude of this partnership cannot be understated, now the Akkies are a part of the Old Modernians Association, we are stakeholders in our own future and can plan ahead with confidence and stability. In short, we will finally have a proper home."
Andy Lowe, Director of Rugby for Old Modernians and himself no stranger to Rugby League following a spell at Keighley Cougars in the 1990s, is also looking forward to what Leeds Akkies will bring to the Association: "Old Modernians are pleased and proud to welcome Leeds Akkies Rugby League as part of our association. Along with the football, cricket and rugby union sections, Leeds Akkies will now have a base from which I'm sure they will enjoy plenty of success at Old Modernians over the coming years."
With the new home now established, both the Akkies mens and womens teams are now looking forward to the upcoming season with great anticipation, with pre-season training beginning on Wednesday 31st March.
If you or anyone you know are interested in playing summer Rugby League this season, then Leeds Akkies RLFC would love to hear from both men and women, regardless of playing experience or ability. Please get in touch with the Akkies recruitment manager, Dom Varley at dom.varley@hotmail.comor 07974 982620.

| Jesus, you're getting closer and closer to me, any more of this and I'll be having to pickup the dogshoit every weekend so you can play in my back garden.
And of course, I am a genuine Old Modernian, oh yes, there aren't too many of us left you know...
PS - the bloke in the old school kit second from right - is he from the 1928 team photo ?
PPS - if you read the honours board behind them you just might see my name, I'm listed under "Played once then retired to the bar"

| When I was a kid my folks did ‘volunteer’ bar duty every 3rd Sunday at the Old Mods. Many a Sunday lunch comprised of coke and crisps.
I may be tempted to pop down if there is going to be cake?

| Gav - have you got a fixtures list you can post?
Also what the cake type will be at each game? I'm not that keen on anything with passion fruit and I’d be a bit disappointed if I turned up and the weeks offering was a passion fruit sponge.
Cheers mate

We will also be running a second team in the merit league and a women's team, who will, where possible, all play on the same day of a first team fixture.
I believe there will be a small selection of cake, ranging from fruit and nut all the way to double chocolate fudge, depending on results on the field, naturally.
As I said in the press release, if you're interested in having a game this summer, then please get in touch!

| I attended a few games when Akkies played at Bramhope, as it was close to Yeadon, and now even less excuse to attend a few games.

Maybe if Wheels could obtain a cake menu for each of those games then we could start to make firm commitments, I'm naturally reluctant to attend a game where, for instance, a date cake would be given top billing for I detest dates, or prunes, a date and prune cake would have me running for the exits, mind its close enough to pop home for some cake of my own and be back before the full back has finished lining the kicking tee up.
I might be so bold as to suggest a Victoria Jam Sponge with icing sugar dusting be kept on standby at each game, just in case.
No cream please, it plays havoc with my ulcer.

| Victoria sponge (vanilla AND chocolate), Madiera and Battengurg shall be available every week as they are my favourites.
Ginger and Lemon drizzle will also make special appearances during 2010.
If people want dried fruit in their cake, then they will have to bring their own.

| I heard the news on the plane on the way to Italy on Wednesday morning, when I may or may not have been sat next to a senior member of the Old Mods!
Very good news, a great club and a fantastic set of people to join up with, I wish the Akkies all the success at their new home.

It might have been while still on the tarmac at Manchester but we did also discuss it in more detail over a nice meal, in a nice restaurant in La Thuile! So anyone else in hearing vicinity, whom might have been interested and not from the UK now also knows!

| Well done to the Akkies today – some really nice play and some great defensive work despite hop-along granddad in the middle who missed about a million decisions.
…and what about McLovin’ reffing the 2nd’s game?
