What I didn't understand was Eddie's view that leniency is not and must not be shown to any player that's about to play in a big game.

There's a rather large dossier to suggest that leniency in such circumstances is very much the norm rather than the exception.

I haven't seen the Westwood knees challenge but I'd be interested to see it, especially given Westwood's reputation that goes before him.

I think just about every Saints fan agrees with you (and the RFL) on that one. It just looked nasty at the time and Knowsley Road being as it is the most uselessly lit ground in the universe, we could not see what actually happened, just that Lomax went down. The lad has three metal plates in his head so everyone tends to get twitchy when he gets hit around that area of his body. I don't think the ref saw what happened (so what's new!) and in that instance it was only right for the incident to be put on report.
