What deserves a 'Try Assist' this week? Well there were six out of a possible thirteen:
2 - Burrow (Webb 2 tries)
1 - Diskin (Peacock try)
1 - Smith (Burrow try)
1 - Peacock (Webb try)
1 - Webb (Peacock try)
Again (as per usual) very strange how Hall missed out for Senior's first and McGuire for Hall's try. Yet Diskin get's one when Peacock had men to beat on the line. Bizarre. Next season (if it doesn't improve) I might have to give it a separate thread.
Most surprising stat there is probably Diskin's metres. Top effort from dummy half.
Penalty count won 9-3 with the 3 representing a season's best.
Top tackler - Jones-Buchanan (also topped the missed tackle count though)

| Yet another week where we made more than twice as many metres as our opponents.
We did more tackling (+40) in total than against Cas.
Some questions for Tvoc:
What is the most metres made by a side in a single game & the least against?
What are the figures for Leeds?

| I just watched the highlights on SLTV, and have to say that at least Celtic didn't give us a walk-in. Some of the tries against Cas were embarrassing to watch.

| I'm not going to read much into these stats TBH, if I'd have turn up to the game on Saturday with my boots I'm pretty sure I'd have got a run out for the Crusaders.
It was hardly, what you class as, and with all due respect, a comparative match up. Celtic would have struggled against any Championship side with the team the fielded to be fair, let alone a virtually fully fit Champion winning side.
Even Bradford may have turned them over.

The chase back tackle on Donald by their young full-back was the prime example of that. They were already getting flogged and it would have been easy just to make a token effort.
Saying that, Donald should have given it to the guy inside for a walk in.

| 24 missed tackles in a game Leeds were dominating? That needs tightening up for the business end of the season I would suggest.

I'd agree. You can see that in the metres both teams made.
I'd wouldn't have thought they would have made around half the metres we did when you take into account the final score.

| I'd take those statistics with a pinch of salt tbh (as I would with all of them).
Celtic were game but they certainly didn't trouble us to the extent or bust the tackles that those statistics would intimate they did.
When chief statistician TVOC questions the award or otherwise of assists what makes you think Opta will be any more accurate with measuring tackles, missed tackle or metres gained.

I basically only track the stats for Leeds and the Leeds players so I don't have an answer for that one.
Quote ="Old Feller"What are the figures for Leeds?'"
Leeds: Rd 1 to Rd 25 complete
Most metres - Rd 24 Castleford (H) 1,675
Least metres - Rd 19 Hull (A) 1,059
Most tackles - Rd 11 Harlequins (H) 388
Least tackles - Rd 24 Castleford (H) 169
Most missed tackles - Rd 6 St Helens (A) 50
Least missed tackles - Rd 7 Les Catalans (H) 8
Leeds' opponents: Rd 14 to Rd 25 only
Most metres - Rd 22 Wigan (A) 1,362
Least metres - Rd 25 Celtic (A) 737
Most tackles - Rd 16 Huddersfield (H) 358
Least tackles - Rd 20 Wakefield (A) 253
Most missed tackles - Not available due to crappy OPTA reporting
Least missed tackles - Not available due to crappy OPTA reporting

My motivation to produce the weekly figures (in part) is to have them questioned as there appeared a growing tendency on here to take the OPTA stats on the SL website as absolute fact. I generally view them as being better than nothing but question their absolute accuracy. Ian Kirke has kicked a 40/20 and Brent Webb hasn't been sin binned this season according to OPTA. If they can't get those correct what hope is there for the minutia.
Quote ="G1"Celtic were game but they certainly didn't trouble us to the extent or bust the tackles that those statistics would intimate they did.'"
I don't reproduce the tackle busts totals on here (that would be a bit geeky) but I do record the figure just as I do for each Leeds player in all the categories stated on the SL website.
OPTA reported the tackle busts as Celtic 24, Leeds 60
Quote ="G1"When chief statistician TVOC questions the award or otherwise of assists what makes you think Opta will be any more accurate with measuring tackles, missed tackle or metres gained.'"
I highlight the 'try assists' each week as they are an area that people can examine for themselves through the TV footage available from various sources and form their own opinion. Suitably informed they can then see the subjective nature of that particular OPTA stat. Hopefully, like me, they'll be confused by it on an almost weekly basis.

| I think a glaring omission from the team stats is the completion rate.
Sky produce these at half-time for the televised games & I'm sure that all teams collect at least their own.
I wonder why OPTA doesn't include these?

It's a good question.
I've tried tracking completion rates on Sky games and have lost the will to carry on after about ten minutes.
Is it a complete set if you score a try on the third tackle? Is it a complete set if you kick on the fourth?
Quote ="Puig-Aubert"Out of interest TVOC - do you get stats on breaks too?'"
If it's [url=http://www.superleague.co.uk/statistics_club.php?hs1=2009&hp1=250&hs2=2009&hp2=7250&stat=tries&season=2009on the list[/url I record it for both Leeds and their constituent parts or players if you like.

| TVOC, is there any scope for contacting Opta to query their stats? If so, have you ever done so? Things like the aforementioned Kirke 40-20 and Webb sin bin (or lack of it) are beyond embarrassing, and they need to know what a mess their stats are!
Re completed sets, surely a try or an early kick must deem the set completed? I would have thought the only time a set would be incomplete is when it ended before the attacking team wanted it to??

I don't know if there is and I doubt I would go to much effort to do so even if there was to be perfectly honest. If they are the custodians of the official stats it's their responsibility. Needless to say my OPTA spreadsheet doesn't show Kirke's 40/20 (which belongs to Burrow incidentally) and does show the Webb sin-binning at Wakefield.

Is it a completed set if you kick from the scrum base on the first tackle?
Yes I guess it is even though it pushes the boundary of the term 'set'.

| Similarly, if, in need for divine inspiration, you look up to the heavens and see Stevo wildly gesticulating at you, you suddenly think "Ah, I'll try the chip over the top, thanks Stevo!" (regardless of where the full back - and all the other defenders for that matter appear to be - they are inconsequential to our Lord Stevo naturally...) - the intention is obviously to try and retain possession, so if the opposition team catch the ball, technically it's an uncompleted set, however when you kick the ball you know there's a chance you may not get it back, hence choosing to risk ending the set, hence making it a completed set. Obviously.

That was my problem when trying to follow complete sets from Sky games.
Why can't we be Harlequins.
