He was always a clumsy tackler and was lucky on a few occassions.

All about opinions bud. But I certainly can relate to some of the grumblings of the oppossition support to some of his clumsy tackles.

Of course their moanings went overboard sometimes. But sometimes deserved.

I don't recall that one. He got a warning letter for recklessly lashing out with his feet around Rob Burrow's upper body but I'd hardly call that a trip.

I was talking to a mate of mine doing his dream team asking if he should put mathers in and I said to stay clear cos ever since his return from auz he's been sent to the sidelines more than jim gannon.. can't remember him being so dirty at leeds..???

It just highlights the coaching ability of noble that he destroys the potential mathers had and gets rid of wigans best player last year(higham) for fatty riddell!!

As said above, he was frequently a bit borderline with his tackling, particularly as last man. More clumsy than malicious I would have said. I can also recall a couple of debatable late efforts on try scorers, but nothin worth more than a bit of a finger-wagging as far as I remember.

Have to agree, his late 'tackle' on Motu Tony in the 2005 CC being the one that springs to mind immediately.

Mathers is just a desperate and frustrated character these days. What little pace he had at Leeds has deserted him, along with his confidence. He never was the best tackler in the world anyway. He's getting dirty these days to attempt to make up for his shortcomings in other facets of the game.
In 2004/5 he was so solid fielding any sort of kick, you'd have put your house on it. Now he looks shaky the whole time, just a sad case of injury ruining a very promising career IMO.

It's sad how badly his form has deserted him. I'll always remember that game at the KFC, where it was nil-nil at HT. He was immense in that one.

Mathers is just another example of players thinking the grass is greener away from Leeds in recent years.

In morley's case it's 9yrs since he left and even longer in goulding's case so i wouldn't count that as recent.
