| Obviously we all hope the injury is not serious. Have Wigan issued a statement explaining the extent of the injury?. It maybe the player is still having examinations and scans. Be interesting to see what the injury is, which in no way deflects from the nature of the tackle.

| Quote ="SmokeyTA"I honestly don't think Ferres has the capacity for that. And I don't mean that in a complimentary way. He gives away 1 or 2 dumb penalties a game, makes 1 or 2 dumb offloads a game, he will make 1 or 2 just plain dumb decisions again like trying to put a kick in or throwing out a pass like he thinks he's Wally Lewis. I think if he had the awareness and wherewithal to donthat deliberately he would be a much better player than he has show so far'"
Any player in the game knows what hurts, and they spend literally hours each week in wrestling practice - of course he has the mental capacity to understand when he's got the opportunity to hurt - and IMO he knew full well what he was doing. He was trying to stamp his authority on them - which I've no problem with, he just went too far and will pay the price for it.

Does make you wonder if it is 3 broken vertebrae if the club itself hasn't said so. The lower end of the 2-3 month timeline they've said he'll miss looks very short for the suggested injury.

I hope they are not broken and Gildart gets well soon.
Perhaps the Wigan fan(s) is/are guilty of over egging the pudding somewhat?
Pretty distasteful and pious for the Wigan lot to peddle these rumours given the sensitivity of the situation and vitriol spouted at others that dare discuss it on terms they don't agree with.

It's the dumbest most idiotic suggestion I have ever heard. She is supposed to be a professional journalist within our game. I'm embarrassed for her. Not least because had Gildart not been injured that would mean Ferres got no ban, even though one was clearly deserved.

| most people agree he deserved a 6-8 game ban. He got 6 so justice is served and you would expect Ferres' card to be well and truly marked now. That should be the end of the matter, don't see the point in droning on TBH.

| Is it me or are seeing increased lengths of bans this year which people are still incredibly unhappy with?
The Ferres one I have no issue with as in some ways it's fairly unprecedented.
However, Singleton's seemed harsh when you compare it to similar things from years gone by. As long as they are consistent.
I remember Cassidy on Morley getting 6 games - that would be worth a dozen now.
Scruton spear tackled Cunningham a few years ago and only got 3 games and while the intent would be hard to prove the duty of care is still there.
I think 6 - 8 games is a huge punishment and should be reserved for instances such as this which could result in serious injury.
Cheap shots have always been part of the game. No one wants to see it but 3-4 games should be deterrent enough

Now Phil Clarke is at it:
www.skysports.com/rugby-league/n ... gby-league
I like how he states that this isn't a personal attack on Ferres before going through his disciplinary record in detail and passing judgement... Does he do this for every bad incident or just when it is a foul committed against a Wigan player?

wonder if the roles were reversed if he had been so forthcoming. I very much doubt it

| I don't think Clarke's piece is all that bad to be honest. The silence from Leeds is deafening though. McDermott's been pretty outspoken against serious foul play on more than one occasion in the past and I had hoped that he (or GH) would make a similar point when a Leeds player was the culprit. If they're serious of removing it from the game that is, and not just from the opposition's repertoire.
Their failure to speak up means that it's the likes of Clarke and Powers who get to lead the debate.

| To be fair that article itself isn't too bad. There's a few strange phrases in it which give away his feelings especially quoting Ferres disciplinary record.
The problem is I don't remember him sounding off so much when non-Wigan players are on the receiving end of such bad tackles. I may be wrong but I don't remember Clarke's outrage when Ferres was on the receiving end of a cannonball tackle from Chase or any other player from other clubs when Wigan were bringing in the cannonball tackle and other house tactics.

McDermott's pre game press conference is tomorrow, I'm sure it'll be discussed then.

In which case fair enough. I hope he speaks frankly, if it stops another tackle like that it'll be worth it.

| Classic Clurkey.
In the mould of the old "I'm not racist but" style of poop throwing that's par for the course with this tool.
Always to be found spouting an opposite view, usually without merit or reason his true Goon bias has been showing through more and more and is becoming a running joke.
I whole-heartedly agree with the above posters assessment of the clubs silence on the matter, leaving the door open for grade A, jingoistic drivel from Clurky and Powers in the name of journalism.

Do you think if the club made some statement on the issue that would've stopped Clarke from writing that?

| For once, I have no massive issue with what Clarke has said. Taking club bias out of it, I think he's pretty much bang on the money. That doesn't excuse any of his pro-Wigan, anti-anyone else vitriolic outbursts in the past.
Didn't he defend Cassidy in his appeal all those years ago?

| Nothing wrong at all with Clarke's article. Get the blue and amber tinted specs off. Ferres could have broken Gildart's neck, and had ample time to realise what was happening in the tackle and stop it. He deserves every minute of 6 weeks.
The main thing is the hope that Gildart isn't permanently affected. Everything else, especially the length of Ferres' suspension is secondary IMO. The other big positive could be what Clarke alludes to and we don't see these tackles again.
Suspensions in the NRL led to them virtually being eradicated, which showed two things - firstly that they were only happening as a direct result of coached tactics involving wrestling, which were going wrong on the field, and secondly that even the dumbest players can avoid doing them.

| I would like to think Clarke's interjection is to do with his similar career-ending injury when he was at his peak, rather than because it's Wigan. I can't disagree with much he says; Ferres does seem to have an arrogant, selfish attitude that manifests itself on & off the pitch.
