That was in 2000 shortly after the nightmare start under Dean Lance. Beat Wigan too then went on a decent unbeaten run which ended, IIRC, at Cas in a belter of a game. Blackmore sent off early on & Harris magnificent

31-May-00 ..... Wheldon Road ..... Castleford Tigers 18 Leeds Rhinos 20
Under Dean Lance when Ryan Sheridan scored with 40 seconds left on the clock and Iestyn Harris (who had missed his other three conversion attempts) slotted the angled goal as the final hooter sounded.'"
Can I remember Dunneman dropping a goal to win a game at Cas? Seem to remember it being a really ugly effort. Was one of 2 games in a row he won for us IIRC. Probably don't though!

He did and it is those two games you've linked to from 2003.
Just one thing though. In-between them there was the small matter of the 'Russell Smith' Challenge Cup Final as the meat in that particular sandwich.

The only absentee from the 17 was Blackmore and the only absentees from the squad were Marvin, Lawford and Sterling.

Almost like the '99 season then for Blackmore. He played in the CC wins V Wigan and St Helens; then missed the first two rounds of SL and the CC QF; then played in the semi V Bradford; then missed the next five rounds of SL; then played in the Final at Wembley; then missed the next fifteen rounds of SL; then played in two; then missed the final six rounds of SL and the two Play Off games.

A friend of mine always insists we were a better team without him, maintaining that the best rugby we played under Murray was just after the CC win, when Golden was playing in the centre position.
It's hard to argue with his logic. We had some tremendous wins during that time. One absolute hamering of Bradofrd at HQ springs to mind.

We battered wigan a week before that i think as well at central park. When i say battered i don't mean thrashed, but as was typical under murray our forwards just trampled theirs.
Then in midweek after the bulls thrashing we thrashed cas as well, who were pretty good back then and one of our bogey teams.

I'd be careful when talking 'just' after that CC win as we started with a visit to that club Graham Murray didn't rate the following Tuesday and they put the cleaners through us. In fact they could have probably played the cleaners that evening and still won and Leeds (oddly) had a respectable looking side out as well.

That was a pretty decent sequence of results at the time:
11-Jun-99 ..... Central Park ..... Wigan ..... 9,588 ..... Won 13 - 4
18-Jun-99 ..... Headingley ..... Bradford ..... 21,666 ..... Won 45 - 16
23-Jun-99 ..... Headingley ..... Castleford ..... 16,371 ..... Won 50 - 22

It was awesome.
As i remember it we were well in contention for 2nd that season after losing ground around cc final time.
But then we were IMO very hard done by in a game against saints at headingly when inexplicably morley was sent off after 2 minutes for simply shoving someone at the play the ball, IIRC.
This gave saints the advantage, later on we then had 'that' defeat at odsal from the withers drop goal and 2nd was gone. I remember being there it was absolutley heaving i can never remember so many leeds fans in that end.

Actually I am doing Marvin a dis-service there. He played some good rugby that year and actually almost made the Wembley 17 after some quality displays off the bench into the back row.

Unlucky also not to retain the centre spot for the CC final, Blackmore recovered from injury just in time and got his spot back. Marvin had a great run and put in some work man like performances for us, if not spectauclar. Solid, is the word. But then looking at Blackmores distribution to Rivett proved the difference on the day. I also remember in that season Marvin scoring his only hat-trick for Leeds against Cas at HQ. His third was a kick and chase, and wasn't a bad effort when you consider he wasn't the quickest. Funniest thing about that, was that Franny got the MOM!! Where's the justice?
