Bobby Goulding's Leeds career:
Played 32 + 3, Tries 7, Goals 14, Drop Goals 5, Points 61
I always remember Goulding 'crossing' himself as he came out to make his 1st grade debut at Headingley (8th September 1991), the same day as Hanley made his Leeds debut. It's not something I could recall seeing any other player do at Headingley.

| Pedant mode on: Ian Mackintosh was a great prospect but his career was ended by a serious leg injury of some kind. I can't remember what exactly but at some point in 81-82 he was bascially told to take at least a year off to give himself half a chance of recovery.
Conway was a sad 'might have been'. Great pace but sadly - as with a lot of Leeds halfbacks - no passing game to speak of.

| Recalling events from the early eighties doesn't in itself make someone a pedant.
Andy rather than Ian was the one who looked to have the most potential. If I had to liken him to a current SL player it would have to be Sam Tomkins only without some of the attitude. He made a major breakthrough in a YTV televised game from Headingley V Barrow, where John Holmes incidentally, having been moved into the second row to accomodate young Andy, got himself sent off after a skirmish with Steve Kirkby. Andy Mackintosh was the one who stole the headlines though. Like his brother he was plagued by injury with knee problems and he also broke his arm quite badly one year at Castleford.
The surprising thing about Andy Mackintosh was that he never scored a point at 1st grade level for Leeds despite making 26 Appearances.
Ian Mackintosh by contrast contributed 51 in his 12 1st grade appearances and whilst being a decent kicker helped his cause he also contributed three tries along the way.

The incident does get a mention in someone's autobiography, either Schofield or Laughton's IIRC.
The version recounted is that Goulding and Gareth Stephens got into an altercation during a pre-season training camp in Anglesey, during which Goulding gave Stephens a bit of a hiding.
Douggie dragged him into a meeting that evening and gave him a lecture, at which point Goulding went out and took a fire extinguisher to Laughton's car doing a fair bit of damage.

| I only started watching Leeds in 81-82 tvoc, so missed the prior year when I think Andy Mackintosh played quite a lot. I only ever saw him as a replacement at stand off when Holmes was injured - generally inducing groans around the ground when announced (I know he played a few times in the centres later).
Goulding could have been a Leeds great. Had we managed to retain him (and somehow get a decent fullback as he was swapped for Tait) we would have had on paper a genuine class half-back pairing for years with Schoey. As it was he kicked us to death in the JPT final for Widnes the very year he left IIRC.

| Just on McGuire's tryscoring, from what I can gather his strike rate is better than the likes of Edwards and Hardisty. I had a quick look in "100 Leeds Greats" or whatever its called (by heck that needs some serious updating to get rid of the likes of Gallagher, Trevor Paterson etc etc) and it said Hardisty scored 304 tries from 540 games. Edrwards scored (as far as I can tell as finding decent stats on players is ridiculously hard) something like 274 in 467 games for Wigan plus another 40+ elsewehere - i.e. similar to Hardisty.
It also in part explains why most club records will never be beaten - for a lot of Edwards' career Wigan would have played over 40 games a year - certainly a good ten more games than teams do now.

Ian Kirke (Salford Away) played his 100th game for Leeds on Sunday. He became the 29th player to do so for Leeds during the SL Era. Still above him on the list are 12 current 1st team squad members.
Just behind: Brent Webb now stands on 98 with Carl Ablett closing in on 97, behind them of the current squad Ryan Hall is next up with 81.

| Ryan Hall: SL Era - All Comps
Played 79 + 2, Tries 67, Strike Rate Per Appearance 0.83
Once you exclude the low appearance/high try count anomolies in Michael Coady (3 in 2), Paddy Handley (2 in 2) and Dean Bell (1 in 1) then Ryan Hall has the best strike rate for any Leeds player of the SL Era.
The only other Leeds' players that have hit above a 2 try in every 3 Appearances are:
Danny McGuire: 181 in 241 - 0.75
Mark Calderwood: 106 in 143 - 0.74
Marcus Bai: 45 in 63 - 0.71
Brent Webb: 69 in 98 - 0.70
Danny Williams: 12 in 18 - 0.67

| Thanks TVOC. So, there is a good argument that he is our best winger in the Super League era, if you use strike rate as a basis.
You can't fault the lad really. He was given a chance and took it with both hands. He's not as flash as some wingers, nor as fast, but he does what needs to be done, and doesn't make many monumental cock ups, unlike the wingers of some other clubs.

Couldn't agree more, Both have fantastic strike rates for half backs
In regards to being appreciated by the Rhinos faithfull............
Why has Danny McGuire never been given the same adulation that all of all the other players at the club have?
I may be wrong here, but every time i hear that faint chant of:" There's only 1 Danny McGuire" from the SS after he has scored a try, I have never seen him acknowledge them?
What have they got against him?
Quite shamefull really!

No problem but if tries were worth4 points in those days Lewis would have had a higher points tally.
While you have your books out - do you have the top 10 attendances at Headingley - all eras and all competiions?

He would but they were worth what they were worth as were drop goals and again that was different to what they are worth in the modern day.
I'm not aware of anyone ever trying to adjust points totals to take account of differential scoring systems.
Quote ="Juan Cornetto"While you have your books out - do you have the top 10 attendances at Headingley - all eras and all competiions?'"
I don't have such figures as it goes but I note that Headingley's top attendance for a Leeds league game was 40,175 V Bradford Northern, 21st May 1947 and for a Leeds cup game 38,914 V Wigan, 9th February 1957.
(The biggest Headingley attendance for a Test match was 36,529 Great Britain V Australia, 9th October 1948.)
The book they came from covers 1895 to 1979 and I can cover the rest to date and without looking I know there is nothing to compare to those so imagine the rest of the top 10 would be around those times also.

| You can't easily adjust Lewis Jones' total, but you can make Sinfield's equate to the scoring used in Jones' day - add a point to every drop goal and subtract a point for every try he has scored. IIRC Sinfield's 'adjusted' points total would only be about 40 lower than it is, because he hasn't scored that many tries. As tvoc said, however, point scoring records tend not to be adjusted for changes in values for tries etc, so its irrelevant. When Sinfield passes Jones' total (as he should if he stays for another two years) it will rightly be regarded as a huge achievement.

| I dont understand why McGuire never gets applause either ,sometimes its even the man who puts McGuire in for the try that gets the praise.
Example when Hall put Him in for the last try against Shudders they started singing Hall's name. But if it was the other way round which it has been a few times. After all he is our top assist player but they would still sing Hall's name.
Also when players like Eastwood are only staying for 1 or 2 seasons the southstand thinks the sun shines out of their ass's.
Lauititi for example great player but only plays when he wants to!
The Southstand go mad for him.
What about getting behind our local and loyal lads and sing for the likes of Bailey and Jamie Jones aswell.

JJB - Has his own song.
Bailey has TMFMISL moniker
Trying to fit Danny McGuire's name into a song isnt easy you know. [size=85(although i do have one lined up, just a few kinks to work out)[/size
