And it's widened so far this season but honestly who cares right now, Leeds are ahead of Bradford on the table for the first time in 15 seasons.

Now time to forge ahead, (overcome Bradford's Salary Cap points deduction) and remove any lingering doubts over the validity of the 2nd spot on the table.

McGuire's strike rate is superb. Interesting that he's played a few games less than Burrow. Did Burrow have half a season start on him?

As these are Starts rather than Appearances, McGuire made his full debut in the Away game at Widnes (22nd June 2002) which marked Burrow's 14th start. Using that yardstick they've almost exactly kept pace with each other since then.

Burrow also got the drop on McGuire having 12 Appearances under his wee belt before McGuire made his debut 6th July 2001. That accounts for some but not by any means all the additional 47 appearances Burrow has made for Leeds.

Those are amazing strike rates for half backs. I think both are under appreciated. This has been a golden period and surely they will be looked back upon one day with the same revereance as Hardisty and Hepworth, Shoebtoom, Holmes, Jones and all the other great halves the club has seen.

I think Danny has fewer appearances than Burrow due to some injuries around 2005-2006

Burrow was used as impact sub quite a lot too once established wheras once established Danny has pretty much started when fit

I've always thought if they played for a Lancastrian club they'd get more of the credit they deserve.

Great half backs often appear in and make great partnerships. Jones/Stevenson, Shoebottom/Seabourne, Hardisty/Hepworth, Holmes/Dick, Schofield/? (I'm struggling with this one) and now McGuire/Burrow.

I never saw the first pair unfortunately but of those I have seen Shoebottom and Seabourne will always remain my favourites. One the whippet the other the terrier. And of the pairing Shoebottom will never be surpassed in my eyes and his loss from the game at 26 remains one of the all-time tragedies of Rugby League. As John Holmes once commented; [i"Mick Shoebottom was the best player I have ever seen. He was versatile, hard, had rare match-winning qualities and was an inspiration to everyone around him. Shoey was absolutely superb."[/i

I think there are a lot of players at Leeds who don't get the credit they deserve for whatever reason. And that includes by the Leeds fans!

Graham Holroyd to complete that Schofield pairing?



Was Dick actually outright first choice at Leeds for more than three or four years from 78 onwards? Can remember him playing against the Kiwis (1980?) but seem to remember him splitting a lot of time with Mark Conway after that...

I was looking for a half-back accomplice for John Holmes and the one that immediately came to mind was Kevin Dick, irrespective of the time they spent together in the roles, it's the partnership I associate.

Basically the Leeds scrum-half role post Keith Hepworth went to a combination of Peter Banner (signed from Featherstone) and a young Chris Sanderson as understudy. When Banner decided to emigrate to Australia it opened the way for Kevin Dick to emerge in support and potential challenger to Sanderson. With the tragic loss of Chris Sanderson at Salford in '77 Leeds brought in John 'Sammy' Sanderson to bridge the gap. Which he did in fine style until 1980/81 sharing the role with Dick. Ian Mackintosh then had a brief look in but like his twin brother (Andy) faded quite quickly from the Headingley scene leaving the way clear for Mark Conway to emerge.

Conway did so at 1st grade level during the 1982/83 season but Dick remained the more usual 1st choice at half back until the 1986/87 season where ironically having finally got the upper hand both Conway and Dick left for pastures new at Belle Vue and The Boulevard respectively.

Mark Conway's early Headingley career was a prime example of not what to do with promising young players as he would regularly turn out for the Colts, reserve grade and 1st grade over the course of a week.

So you were making things up to suit your proposition.

As the proposition was that quality half-backs often also form quality half-back combinations then for Leeds Holmes and Dick (IMO) did just that and I'd also be extremely surprised if Holmes had another half-back partner as many times as he was paired with Kevin Dick. Unless anyone knows differently?

Still trying to think of a scrum-half to partner with the usually outstanding Schofield though and perhaps Harris and Sheridan deserved a mention also.

Ray Ashton, Patrick Entat, Andy Gregory, Bobby Goulding would all have been around the time of Schoey, the pick of those would have been Gregory.

In his prime, perhaps, but that was long time gone when he joined Leeds.

Out of them, probably Entat was the most consistent.

Even at Leeds I would have put Gregory ahead of the others, i felt he was much better at dictating the play, would do the dirty work and took the pressure off Schoey allowing him the room to play wider.

You might be right. Is there an opposite of 'Rose-coloured specs'? I just remember being very disapointed with him. There is a chance that my recollections may be coloured by the many years I spent shouting 'Aaaaaaandy Gregory is a w*nk*r' at him. He used to make me angry in my youth.

lewis jones played more at stand off at the latter end of his career at wembley in 1957 it was lendil- stevenson .Colin Evans is a scrum half who rarely gets a mention he had some great seasons partnering Jones especially in the 1960-61 championship season. Jones -Evans was a great half back pairing

The best of Schoey's partners was undoubtedly Goulding. Didn't he win Player of the year in his sole season?

Gregory in the Blue and Amber (or red and Black) was absolute gash. Entat couldn't oust Holroyd and Ashton was number 7 whilst Schoey was in the centres IIRC.

Aye but when you look back with nostalgia and you remember the little barrel with thigh sized arms (always reminded me of popeye - in fact that might have been a (kind) nickname) who was always interviewed the family scrap yard where he worked the anger dissipates.

What were Goulding's stats with us?

And does anyone want to be the first to repeat the heresay about why he left the club?
