Well the coach agrees with you and gave a lot of praise to both Walters("outstanding today in defence and offence and scored a try"icon_wink.gif who played 80 minutes and also Cam Smith.

Some people can never admit when their judgement has been proven to be wrong which is why you have to take their comments with a large pinch of salt

To be fair, I can see both sides of the Walters argument. Today he was good & will probably get a high OPTA tackle count. However, if you were there you will have seen a guy with tremendous heart & effort, but falling off the tackle on many occasions, which could prove fatal against a decent side. I was pleased for him that he got his try at the end & hope he gains some confidence from this, but (as has been alluded to) he is, at best, a filler. Considering some of the comments about our youth teams on this site, I don't think there will be much opportunity for him in the coming years.

As for Cam Smith, I think he had a great game today.

PS. Myler could be a gem.

Walters did ok today for me. At end of day he is probably earning peanuts and is about 6th or 7th choice 2nd rower in squad. He filled in well today.

To say he was a joke is ridiculous.

Did he drop off some tackles? Sure but he was probably blowing out of backside. When was last time he did 80? Has he ever done 80?

Cam Smith did very well today also. Got longer minutes and worked hard.

Myler and Hall very good again but overall it was a great advert for playing 1 game at Easter.

He has and it's tedious.

His performance today wasn't anything special but he did ok, yet as usual whenever he plays regardless of whether it's an improved showing like today or he gets limited minutes you know the same poster will be straight on and it'll be one of if not the first thing he mentions about the whole game slagging him off.

OPTA recorded that Walters made 57 meaningful tackles with 16 marker tackles that tell you he was first in on many and then made consecutive follow up tackles. He made 14 carries and was our equal best for tackle busts and one of only two to make a clean break. With two offloads (also top), a try and no errors this backed up McD's assessment of an outstanding performance for Walters.

Cameron Smith was our second highest for tackles with 45 and marker tackles with 9 and also made 14 carries.

These are impressive KPIs for two young fringe players who have stepped up after getting a lot of criticism and on the back of other recent good performances they deserve the credit when due.

If Carlsberg did OPTA stats, they would probably add a column for "Falling off tackles"...

Look, as I stated, I think he had a good game with lots of heart & effort. He has really stepped up for us during our "injury crisis".

I maybe wrong but I don't think OPTA count it as a tackle unless it was effective. I am not sure what you define as falling off tackles as if it was ineffective OPTA would record it as a missed tackle and against Salford Walters made 3 missed tackles.

So 57 tackles and 3 misses is hardly "falling off the tackle on many occasions" You may recall he made 38 tackles against the big Hull pack not so long ago coming off the bench.

To be fair Walters did as much if not more than some of our experienced players yesterday and you cannot ask for any more than that.
Again Myler did well as did the whole team who got us the 2 points.
Wakefield will be another step up from Salford and we could do with one or two of our props back by then but guess that will only be Mullalley.

I trust my own eyes more than someone else's.

We only see what we want to see and often our prejudices can get in the way.

The coach rated Walters performance as "outstanding" while Gotcha thought his performances a "joke" So eyes are not always reliable whereas the stats usually do not lie.

Because of the critics on here, I paid a bit more attention to Walters yesterday, and my eyes thought he turned in a fine performance. He worked hard, made no obvious errors and took his try very well. Fair play to him.

What about the eyes of the OPTA stat man? The "usually true" stats are compiled from someone's eyes, are they not?

my two penny's worth on Walters.
not a great player and average player at best, but has always been a trier and plenty of effort. due to this extended run he has improved game on game, and been rewarded with some plaudits especially after a stand out performance yesterday. once everyone is fit he may push for a regular place, and has put himself in window, if if cannot command a start at Leeds then after these good performances maybe another side may think he is worth a look, if all players who stand in stood up this well regardless of ability and and showed determination and attitude like this, then we wont go far wrong. the lad has shown guts and determination to fight for a place, that deserves respect regardless of ability.

What the spectators see with their own eyes either live or on TV forms nothing more than opinion which we are all entitled to and which differs greatly.

While professionally produced stats do not tell the whole story they are accepted by the clubs and coaches as factual and form important KPIs when players performances are analysed after the match. OPTA pour over videos of each match with plenty of rewinds to get their figures out the next morning. Yes they will make the odd human error but they do not have the emotional and in some cases agenda driven "eyes" that the fans often have.

For instance you stated that Walters fell off tackles "on many occasions" but failed to be precise with what you mean by "fell off the tackles" and failed to quantify the "many occasions"

So tell me in just how many of Walters 57 tackles did he fall off?

I saw 4. How many did you see? I saw Cam Smith drop off 0. How many did you see?

(I said many occasions, as 4 is too many & there may have been more that were on the far side that I missed)

To be fair 4 out of 57 is not too bad a return.
What is that in percentages around 7% meaning he had a 93% success rate which is impressive.
Btw I`m not a big fan of Walters but those stats right or wrong are good.

Which is what I said in my first post - I just mentioned that he does have a tendency to slip off tackles, which COULD prove critical in a semi- or final against a top team.

But you could say that about any player not just Walters.
