| Quote ="Biff Tannen"Pains me to say, but although i agree with everything you say, the best team of the whole SL era was the 2006 Saints with Lyon at his peak- Sculthorpe, Long, Pryce, Wellens, Cunningham etc.. - Huge front rowers and a young Graham and Roby. Despite all our superb sides i don't think we ever got a year that would topple that team.'"
Yes but we were in a bit of transition year 2006, they were great side but a year later on with practically the same squad and on course for a successive treble we whooped them in the grand final. and the next 2 years as well. our squad in 2007 was much better than out average 2006 squad only hull challenged saints that year. our 20078-2009 squad was better than saints squad 2007-2009 which was mainly the 2006 squad minus lyon from 2008 onwards.

| Really? Leeds 2006 was not transition and was pretty much the same squad in 2007 and 2005 for that matter, infact we had added JP for 2006. we were just not good enough and got mugged in the play offs first against Wire iirc.
Lets not forget 2007 saints won the LLS shield again and again in 2008, i think 2008 they had like a 22 or 23 match winning streak, that was a great team and we did fantastically well to win 3 in a row over that lot. I still believe 2006 was it's peak though and was the best side SL has seen although it would be close between the Bulls early 2000's and our 2007/8 sides.

| In 2006 Saints scored 48 points and 2007 it was 38.
Leeds were 38 points in 2006 down to 37 a year later but teams did play a game less, so seems more a case of Saints dropping back a bit.
Whilst no real change in points we won the additions of Kylie and most crucially Webb in 2007 were big. Add in Donald settling after a poor debut year and Peacock after being switched between prop and 2nd row in 2006.

Dont know what you have been watching, since they reduced the interchanges in the NRL there has been a lot more ball movement and I think the actually quality of the games is as good as I have seen.

I think the NRL has kept its standards. Ways of playing have changed, it hasn't got better, it hasn't got worse (well, it has got a bit worse as a spectacle because they can't shoulder charge or scrap any more, but that's nothing to do with quality of actual play). That's the NRL in general, but Melbourne this year are the best RL club side I've ever seen.

| The Melbourne V Brisbane game this morning was pretty poor, some absolute howlers with the commentators trying to convince the audience it was still a quality game.
Get Craig Bellamy a microphone...... and a bleep machine.

| Leeds 2004 by plenty, don't think there waseven a debate myself, but know doubt now. This cas side will be remembered about as much as the Huddersfield side which topped the League, maybe slightly More as they did actually get to Old Trafford.

I recon they will go down as one of the best teams to not win it, along with us in 05 and Saints in 08

| Biff - the 2007 squad was definitely a transition from 2005. Outs - Bai, Calderwood, Dunemann, McKenna, Ward, Mathers, Walker, Millard, O'Neill. Ins - Donald, Peacock, Toopi, Leuluai, Webb.
That's a pretty major set of changes in anyone's book.

| This is a comparison that as others have pointed out is difficult to make.
However I do believe 2017 top Superleague/NRL sides are substantially physically fitter and fundamentally physically stronger
than the players of 2004, this would I think even up a lot if not all of any perceived skills gaps.
Backs are now almost the size of forwards and forwards are as fit as backs.
This increase in physicality is I would suggest a major contributor to the perceived/possible "game quality" issues.
I think this is particularly apparent, positively in the physicality and quality of goal line defence and
very negatively in the excessive wrestle at the tackle.
It is also causing high rate of injuries to what are after all very fit people.
( I also believe you can see exactly the same "quality issues" due to the increase in physical size/fitness of players in rugby union.)
All things being said I have enjoyed this season as much as any in the last 13 years.
Its just a different game now!!!!!
P.S. leeds 2004 would win but that may just be rose tinted glasses!!

I'm really glad for you, but from my view the SL regular season was pretty bad and a real hard watch at times across the board (some cas games apart). Obviously the last couple of weeks were great and we are on a high still but it doesn't change all that went before it.

Agree with this and I think the game in general has to address the issues that flow from the 10 metre rule, increased physicality and fitness of all the professional game and the consequent and hugely damaging increase in the number and severity of injuries to key players pretty much across the board (imagine how frustrating it must be to have been a Wigan fan this season) and the ugly farce that the ruck and PTB have become. I suggest that nobody wants to watch the wrestling at the ruck

| One thing that I think definitely needs looking at are the rugby balls themselves. More and more complaints that it's like a bar of soap and whilst you expect some knock ons in wet weather it's getting to ridiculous levels now.

Never understood why they got rid of Steeden tbh.
Wrt improving the game as a whole we need the ptb regulating better in its entirety not least the diving & lack of actually ptb.
Also ditch the "refs call" or as i call it blatant guessing just refer it as try yes or no.

all good points.refs call is terrible, if ref is uncertain just go upstairs and leave it to the guy with the tech. And the VR also needs to speed up his decision making it get tedious to watch endless shot after shot after shot..just looking for a reason to allow it or not usually stemming from the ref's call.

| Agree regarding the speed of the video ref, obviously they need to get it right ,but sometimes its clear as day after ten seconds and theyr still looking a minute later.
The salary cap, whilst needed, was always going to negatively effect the quality of the competion, especially the nrl cap rising how it has. 10/15 year ago all the best british players played in superleague and were suplemented by a few world class and lots of international class nrl players.
If burgessx3,hodgson,graham,widdop,whitehead were in superleague and you added the quality of nrl player we used to bring over for example a lauititi/j taomalolo...B Webb/m moylan...M Gidley/w chambers...M bai/j mansour...S Renouf/d gagai...D Furner/w graham...a Lamb/m pearce...m johns/a seizer...D albert/a johnston and many more. If you added just the 7 brits and 9 aussies/kiwis mentioned and gave 4 each to the top 4 clubs, the standard of the current superleague would go through the roof, and it would be top heavy and not as competitive top to bottom, like it used to be. Regardless of the changes in how the games played and the ruck being a mess,i think the quality of the players will determine the quality of the comptition.
The 2004 leeds team were miles better in there era than the cas 2017 team are in this era imo
