| Quote ="The Penguin"Funny isn't it. Down at Quins we got used to him making barking statements in the Media that seemed to go unnoticed. And now you appear to be surprised when this famously useless coach dishes out more of the same.
Last year had a particularly memorable Media nugget from McDermott. We'd been beaten 40-4 by Huddersfield in a truly wretched performance, including a Completion rate of 27% from our side. McDermott said after the game 'we didn't do a lot wrong'.
I bet Brian McLennan is busting a rib laughing.'"
Brilliant!
He has only been he this season though, you had a few years to get used to the bizzare. hopefully he wont be here soon but if he stays I am sure we will also ignore the comments!

No way are those quotes similar to the way McDermott talks in that Sky Sports interview.
The line about if Wigan play well we've basically no chance is something TS would have NEVER come out with

| At least its an insight to why he is a bad coach he probably says it every week and plays people even ones out of form so it does not upset them. Its a bit like my under 9s team when someone says its not about winning its the taking part, like fook. I would prefer the winning mentality as young as possible not that i am allowed to preach that like . Wonder if other countries practice this shi t too or is it just our pc mad one.

There's nothing wrong in wanting to win, as long as the approach is right, ie the lesser developed players are equally involved as the bigger, faster, stronger ones, they are encouraged to understand game structure and arent shouted and balled at by the coach when things dont go well. Too many coaches at junior level are hell bent on winning (mainly for their own ego) that's it's at a detriment to the skill development of ALL players, putting the biggest lad over the line time and again isn't coaching. That's the real issue.

| He's obviously trying for the TS style 'performance over result every time' but didn't quite convey it as well as he could have done. Not worth getting your knickers in a twist over.
The bigger problem is that he seems incapable of spotting a good performance in the first place, and the results aren't coming either.

| Spot on Seth & Richie. I sincerely hope Joshua102 is not focussed on winning with his u9's team and should be far more focussed on making the sport enjoyable & accessible to all types of kids and on developing skills.

| I'm actually, genuinely, hoping we get thumped on Friday.
If we manage to scrape a win, it would be solely down to the players playing their hearts out, and probably a few lucky calls, and nothing to do with McDermott's coaching ability. Were we to win, it would simply paper over any cracks and give McDermott a few more weeks/months grace. Losing is better in the long term.
As much as I'd love to beat Wigan, it would be short term satisfaction, and we'd wake up Saturday morning with McDermott still in charge. A heavy loss is the better result for the good of the team.
Deadly serious.

Absolutely correct - this is particularly prevelant in soccer where the coaches have delusions of being Alex Ferguson!!
What these coaches seem not to understand is - good technique will improve the chances of winning.

Agree completely. As a coach you have to always have that as the priority. Not everyone does, and there aren't many parents who get this. A winning mentality comes from confidence in your performance, not being so comeptitive and fired up that you burst into tears and storm off every time you drop the ball or lose a game (we have a couple of those, as I suspect does every team). And certainly not being told by coaches that you're useless if you make a mistake during a game and lose (can't count how many times I've heard this).
We have to transition to new rules this year and start playing real rugby, the kids have so much to learn, yet we have coaches at our club who just want to coach their age groups in "winning" rather than getting skills developed. There are many other clubs we play who have the same attitude. Part of it is there is real competition for the better kids and parents tend to like their kids in winning teams.
I've written this year off (I just haven't told the press ), I just don't care what the results are, I want the kids to learn right. We will win plenty though, we have some terrific kids.

You can't have it both ways.
If we lose it's his fault and if we win it has nothing to do with him? That doesn't stack up at all.
Even if we lose 70-0 Mac will still be at the training ground come Monday morning. So I'd change tact in wanting us to get stuffed.
I'd like to see us win, amazing that ain't it.
It would be nice to see Leeds playing their heart out. But they are putting a shift in terms of effort, they are just falling well short on the application. With a shaky coach behind them it isn't going to be of much help.

Talking sense in the face of tery.
Typical Bloodbath.
Maybe McDermott senses the players are putting too much pressure on themselves and wants to lift some of that by making it clear that they are underdogs for this game (which they are, by some distance - any Leeds fan who doesn't genuinely believe that wants their head testing).

| McMuppet is a clueless moron and shouldn't be let anywhere near the media. Once again I've had to endure ridicule for being a Leeds fan... from a Bulls fan???
He said "we might be playing s*it at the moment but at least our coach isn't making a tit of himself on national TV."
