| Quote ="tvoc"I guess this must have been your game. I remember it well, in the days when you stood at the back of the Boulevard and tried not to draw attention to yourself. We had to run (in record time) for the last train home and my mate had collected a couple of hundred progs from the shop (lovely lady although her name escapes me) and his bag weighed a proverbial ton. Don't to this day know how we made it but what a great feeling - with Tony Currie the Leeds hero on the night.
Hull:
Gary Kemble
Steve Evans, James Leuluai, Garry Schofield, Paul Prediville
David Topliss, Peter Sterling
Lee Crooks, Shaun Patrick, Paul Rose
John Muggleton, Steve Norton, Gary Divorty
Subs:
Fred Ah Kuoi, Andy Dannatt
Try: Schofield
Goal: Schofield
Leeds:
Paul Gill
Neil Hague, David Creasser, Tony Currie, Neil Hunt
Rickie Lulham, Kevin Dick
Gavin Jones, Trevor Clark, Trevor Patterson
Gary Moorby, Roy Powell, Terry Webb
Subs:
Mark Conway, David Heron
Tries Currie (2)
Goal: Creasser'"
This was a fixture I remember extremely well. Why? Because me and a mate didn't make it to the game. We caught the train to Hull which stopped at York along the way. On reaching York station, the front two carriages of the train continued on to Hull. The rear two carriages of the train terminated at York. Nobody told us! There were no announcements. We were sat on one of the rear two carriages
Having made our way back to Leeds to drown our sorrows in several boozers, a phone call was later made to find out the result. Needless to say, we were both cheesed off having missed the Loiners finally beating Hull.

Unlucky.
We were there from the early afternoon to rifle the programme shop by appointment (Lee Crooks asked us what we were after, while stood in the car-park three hours before kick-off - he loved that club) and we never usually took the train, we must have been proper afraid to leave the car. Still it worked, should have tried it again.

We were well beaten and you won't be the only ones to do that to us. Being realistic I'm just glad you were understrength and picked up some injuries during the game (I don't mean it in that way) or it might have been a cricket score.
I didn't boo either - I just shook my head and cried into the beer I'm not allowed to have in my seat now

Perhaps he could have given Brent Webb a couple of lessons ahead of last week...
Dropping on a bouncing ball when the boots are flying and you're moving at full speed isn't technically difficult, but it's sometimes hard to resist your own sense of self preservation telling you not to be so bloody stupid.
Was it Rob Burrow in the second half who tried to fly-hack a bouncing ball back to one of his own players rather than put his body on the line?

I'm sure Whiting being the class FB that he is would of fielded both Bulls kicks on the 3rd and 4th tackles whilst filling in the gaps in a 12 man defensive line at the same time.

Why - given the size of the in goals at Cardiff - did he feel the need to play in the defensive line at all?
IIRC for one of Whitehead's first half tries he was out of position from being third man in to a tackle that was virtually complete anyway.

That's a question for him or the coach mate but he clearly was told/thought he needed to be in the line.
As for the tackle you see many players "add weight" as the 3rd man in to aid the slowing of the ptb on this occasion it did'nt work.
There are obvious questions after the MM game but just slating Webb for the 2 kicks through early in the tackle count when down to 12 is a bit ott and as much a structural deficiency/good work for Briggs and Kearney imo.

I would suggest that Whiting on his best (a display such as the one he put it on Friday for example) would be every bit the equal of an average Brent Webb performance, let alone one of his worst.
How much longer Leeds fans get the benefit of seeing an average Brent Webb however is a matter for conjecture, as I would also suggest he's going to find his place at risk from Jones-Bishop before the summer is out.

I suspect it will be for as long has his contract has to run. Jones Bishop is a scintillating prospect, no doubt, and is the heir apparent but Webb remains world class, IMO and I doubt they will jettison him just yet.

I can't even begin to comprehend the notation of you preferring Whiting to Webb.
Granted, he is "passed his best", but is still top 3 attacking FBs in the league, and top 5 defensive FBs. I'd even dare to suggest that "at his best" he would be top of both brands.

I would have thought, with Webb looking sharp in the last 2 games, that it's more Lee Smith's place at risk than Webb's at the moment.

| Agreed Rob. I think Webb has started the season really well, bar an interception try to Ah Van in Cardiff. His positioning for grubbers may need some tweaking but those Bradford tries were off the back of QPTBs, so hard to damn him too much.

It will be interesting to see if Whiting plays as 1st choice full back when Cameron Phelps is fit to play. Had Tansey not been sacked he'd have played FB & Whiting would probably have played in the centres.

10th aniversary this year, the club should organise a reunion dinner.
[iUnder-strength Leeds Rhinos re-wrote the chapter on their best Super League win with an incredible 15-6 triumph at Hull. The Rhinos have played far better over the past five years, but never with so much spirit, determination and defensive steel – and never against such overwhelming odds. Missing seven first-choice players and including six members of last season’s Academy team, the Rhinos travelled more in hope than expectation to their least favourite away ground to take on a near full-strength Hull side. And for the first 40 minutes there was nothing to suggest Leeds would do any better than go down to a creditable defeat. The Rhinos defended bravely against incessant Hull attacks throughout a torrid opening period. But they couldn’t control the ball in a torrential downpour and managed just two raids into the home 20 – and it seemed only a matter of time before the floodgates would open. Had Hull managed to get more than one score in front that would almost certainly have been curtains for Leeds. But crucially they couldn’t find a way through an excellent, never-say-die Rhinos defence and incredibly the visitors began to claw their way back into the contest. The catalyst for the Rhinos’ stunning second-half showing was a real collector’s item, prop Danny Ward’s first drop goal at any level. Reminiscent of his father David at Wembley 23 years ago, 21st birthday boy Ward snapped up a rebound from a Robert Burrow grubber and slotted over a perfect right-footer – to his own obvious surprise. Ward’s one-pointer brought gales of laughter from the Threepenny Stand – but it took the Rhinos to within a converted try of the lead and gave them the self-belief to kick on for an amazing win. The drop goal came just a minute after the break and it was another 20 minutes before the Rhinos managed their first try, Mark Calderwood racing from nowhere to out-jump Chris Smith and collect Kevin Sinfield’s pin-point cross kick. [/i

I was working just outside Knutsford that day and the thunderstorm followed me all the way across the country. A couple of times I got just in front of it, but 5 minutes later it was back
I also remember GCH phoning me after the game, which is more than he does!
