Smith played many times wearing no.5 but on right wing and then no.3 right centre inside Scott Donald after Toopi left....ALL during the same time Webb was with us.
He only got that rare FB opportunty in the GF (where he won MOM) after Webb's back injury kept him out.'"
On the flip side, his last appearance for us at FB in his 2nd spell was when we got hammered at Saints when we had the red/pink hair and he was awful.

| Speaking of ex-Leeds players I see Jordan Tansey is the latest one to join Wakefield Trinity Rhinos.

Not surprisingly I had erased that one from my memory ....all I remember is the hair ...and Paul McShane for some reason

Last chance saloon for so many ..... they must have a full team of ex Leeds players in their ranks these last 6 or 7 years??
I made the point elsewhere all the players that Leeds do let go do never again seem to reach the same heights!!!! Or am I wrong?

You could argue that Amor has, but he wasn't released as such. Likewise Terry Newton and Adrian Morley both went on to have pretty good careers after leaving Headingley.

| When oh when will young players understand that leaving a top club both on and off the field like Leeds only ever sends them one way - down.
They claim they leave for sporting reasons but it's all bull. Smith, Caldy, Srcruton the list goes on.

Was just talking about last 6/7 years !! BUT yes forgot about Amor. That was a puzzling one. Didn't Leeds supposedly have some clause that they could have him back if they wanted to? It seems they didn't...and maybe he is the sole one the club has 'let go' that has gone onto greater things (in the last 6/7 years)

Can't say too bothered about Luke Gale either !! He was never gonna get a look in with the famous triumvirate was he?
I always thought Jodie Broughton would go on to greater things and we would regret letting him go....but again the club looks as though it was right.
Even BJB I can't say we've missed....Handley has been just as good/prone to errors (but at least he has youth as an excuse)

And none of those were 'let go', all left of their own accord - Moz and Ellis both left to pursue careers in the NRL, Newton wanted to go 'home' to Wigan - they weren't players we let go and we did extremely well out of all 3 of them during their time with Leeds.
The other players mentioned were generally players Leeds were happy enough to let move on - maybe Scruton is the only one we really wanted, but as has been proven, he's no loss - and he's a massive end of a bell, so probably best got rid of anyway.

That's my point....the ones we "let go" not the ones the club didn't want to "let go" in the last 6/7 (8/9?) years particularly. Scruton maybe as you say (but since proven right again)..and Amor (the only one proving to be a 'regret'). Ali maybe? Even then we got the best years out of him.

If Gale was 2 or 3 years younger, we'd probably have kept him, but you're correct, he came through at the wrong time to ever get a real look in.
Another player I think we missed out on was Gareth Raynor.

| It is shame about Lee Smith, I feel that his trip to the dark side destroyed him, he had the potential to be one of the best players of his generation. I am sure he did very well out of his trip to the Dark Side in terms of money. But it destroyed him as a player.
How many players come back from the Dark Side and can reach the same heights.
But I will always remember him in the Grand Finals and his wonderful performance and also the Leo Sayer hair.

Lee Smith's problem was he was one of those that liked to enjoy life away from the pitch too much. Was speaking to him and his mates the night after the last league game of 2008 in the VIP part of some nightclub.....well I say speaking the guy could barely speak, just a slur of words and barely sit up straight and it wasn't even that late and his mates seemed fine. A month later he was winning the GF MOM. If he had that Sinfield kind of professionalism he could've been even much better.

| Every time I watch Kyle Amor having another storming game for Stains it makes me curse letting him go. The lad has done well at Langtree because he's worked hard and knuckled down (he deserves any success he achieves). Nice guy too.

This ^
I thought we should have fought much harder to keep/resign the big Cumbrian but alas...
Apart from Amor there's no real regrets with any of the players we've 'let go'. Jodie Broughton's doing ok but I still don't think I'd swap him with any of our incumbents.

On the same day Kevin Locke looks to have had his season ended by injury.

I've watched Amor's performances for Saints closely as I never rated him that highly and the high regard in which others held him has long mystified me. In all honesty I've seen little to change my mind. He's been insipid to average against the better teams whenever I've seen him this year.

This year he has been well out performed by Walmsley and even Masoe lately.
