| Quote ="The Magic Rat"Hardakers problems are well documented, and not down to missing a season due to injury, so not sure how that is relevant at all.
Posters on here are suggesting Garbutt was shown the door because of the games he missed last season.
Indeed Sinfield did make a comment last season about too much salary cap sat in the stand injured. The point about Crosby is that although it is early on in the season, to say that Garbutt has only played twice, while one of the players signed to play in his position is out injured himself and is yet to feature. I think Crosby will be a decent signing btw.'"
There’s clearly more to it than just missing a few games because of injury. You can tell from the comments from both Garbutt and Leeds that something had occurred to annoy both sides.

| But with injury surely it's not just the games he has already missed, but the long term prognosis on those injuries and how his body in general will stand up to such a demanding position, and our medical team would have taken a view on this. He may have started well at HKR but if the long term view was that his body wouldn't stand up to it then the right decision had to be to let him go.

I think this is right, the medical and conditioning staff at the club have a very good idea of where each player is at. The club will also factor in general attitude, how the player trains, etc.
Without being inside the camp it's very hard to know.
No player is going to want to believe their body is knackered if their livelihood depends on it, so a difference of opinion is natural.

| Highlighting the sheer stupidity of letting our best prop go at a time we were, and still remain, weak of props is still very worthy of discussion.

Indeed. He's on fire at the moment for KR and its worthy of discussion. I think salary cap and overseas player limits have played a part in letting him go as well as his injury record but it looks at present like a mistake but let's judge at season end

| there are a handful of players in my time that in my opinion letting go was a massive mistake. Paul medley, Bobbie Goulding, Roy Powell (replacing him with mick Worrall) and Jimmy lowes probably the worst of all.
Mitch Garbut is not one of them and i dont think he will prove to be either. he may have a stormer and win man of match when he plays us, see Rob Roberts after he went to Hull, see Brendan Hill every time he played Leeds for about 2 years before disappearing into the lower divisions. we could have a thread about players we have let go and the mixed fortunes, but we have let player go much better than garbutt with little regrets except those i mentioned, who all bit us on the may many times for different reasons.

| Who’s Turner, who are the midgets. And Fifita would definitely be an upgrade on Garbutt
Edit: midgets, clever. Debatable who’s the better player.

| Ive nothing against Garbutt, he was a good workhorse for us when fit and contributed to our successes as a team.
I think the kick up the jacksy he got when rinsed out of Leeds has made him realise he needed to buck his ideas up and he has thus far and now HKR are reaping the benefits. The real issues will start if he gets those niggly injuries and the weight creeps back on, though hopefully he'll be a bit more switched on in that regard now.

| Why are people still talking about Garbutt? We cut him and signed Trent Merrin. Did anyone on here actually see Merrins performance Sunday. He was sensational. Great decision by the club.

| Why are people still saying we cut Garbutt to sign Merrin??
We still had Garbutt when we got Merrin
Garbutt was released to free up another quota spot AFTER and at the time it was heavily rumoured to be able to bring Ikahihifo in from the Giants
It was the release of Delaney that freed up quota space to be able to sign Merrin when Garbutt was still on our books and quota. Garbutt is yet to be replaced although with the recent releases hopefully his replacement will be announced soon

Actually, you need to recheck your dates there. It’s a live cap, and space was made to sign Merrin by including Garbutt off the cap. He had to be released, or several had to be released, in order to sign Merrin. Not saying Merrin is his out and out replacement, that might still come. But they couldn’t both be here, at that time.
Delaney was out of contract as of the end of October, and was already planned to be out of the equation.

we all no there where a number of reasons why he was shown the door, obviously the move to Hull kr is going well for him (3 games) saw the highlights last night he does look a good 6-10 kg lighter than when he was with us last year, obviously knuckled down a bit.

| You'd think we'd released Darren Lockyer with some of the chat on here.
I don't think anyone is surprised he's playing well after 3 games. When he's fit and firing, he's undoubtedly a handy addition to any squad. Let's see if he stays fit...

| People are also assuming he would have had the same attitude for us this year, there was obviously an issue somewhere for us to want to get rid of him, that same issue may have carried on into this year, sometimes a move is needed for a player to give them a kick up the to play at their best.

| Apparently Jackson Hastings is tipping Garbutt for Man of Steel. Not sure I overly trust his judgement though, as his response to the game on Sunday was to say that Salford were 'torn apart' by Richie Myler...
