The main obstacle for Demetriou will be family. A big family man with daughters in school, in Queensland. He might want to serve out his apprenticeships until his kids are older. That's my guess, although a club like yours is a big draw.

All this talk of a coach coming in til the end of the year makes no sense to me. Surely reason we've got rid of McD now is so a new coach can have 10 games or so to assess situation as Saints did with Holbrook last year.

I personally don't want an ex-forward as coach either. We need an offensive mind who can change the brand of rugby and make us worth watching again. Do any ex-forwards who go into coaching ever play an exciting brand? I'm not so sure.

In GH we trust.

Should have been hetherington who got the sack for his lack of spending on players, how does he get away with spending all winter in Australia every year on player spotting and recruitment but never actually gets anyone

So I reckon he will take a role but not immediately probably replace hetherington I reckon

Some things ought to be ruled out immediately. Firstly not a recent ex-player - not Sinfield, not Burrow or whoever. It just doesn't work.

Secondly, not a failed English coach or one with no track record - that means no Lowes, Betts or whoever.

In terms of this year vs next, appointing someone who might be available today for the long term is also a recipe for disaster IMO. Its clear that GH didn't want to be appointing a coach today - it certainly rings true that he gave BM chance to leave on his own terms (publicly at least) at the end of the season, but BM forced him to kick him out on the spot by refusing to play ball.

The options for the longer term are either seek out the next Maguire - ambitious but bang up to date with training, tactics etc - or a 'safer' option in terms of an experienced hand. Either way its a tough choice, but I'd far rather GH gave himself three months to get the right man than rush someone in this season and we end up lumbered with them for two years.

What do people actually expect from Hetherington on this? As a club, if we're not already spending to the cap, we must be pretty damn close to it.

The days of getting quality Aussie imports are long gone. The NRL salary cap is more than £5m compared to our £2m, and the tanking of the £ vs the AU$ makes that difference even more stark.

The only time you'll find quality Aussies coming to Super League is when they, for whatever reason, can't get an NRL gig.

100% correct. The days of recruiting players like Webb, Ali Lau etc are long gone.

The best quality NRL players available are those that have messed up off-field, so they're a huge risk (including Jackson Hastings). Its interesting to see that players here are now playing to an age way beyond what they used to - Smith, Thurston and Slater are all 35 and still going. So we're not even seeing 'has beens' go to SL any more.

So now that the dust is settling a bit, who do people actually want and why?

I'd like to see Powell because he has a track record of bringing through younger players and developing them and his teams play an exciting brand of rugby.

Would like a decent Aussie.

I would like to see someone come in with no connections to the club whatsoever so they can come in and sweep out anything deemed as dead wood without any emotions being attached to a decision. I honestly can't see anyone who fits the bill in the UK apart from maybe Powell but i don't see him leaving Cas whilst they are still moving forward. Looks like Australia would be the best place to shop but will Gary be willing to pay the money possibly required to bring someone decent over?

I Think GH will go all out for Powell.

I’m not convinced he’s the right man for the job at the moment.

Expectations will be sky high and the first sign of it not working and there will be calls for his head!

My main issues are the following.

Has Powell ever coached a team that has won a title/trophy, can he get them over the line?

Im not a fan of his whinging when things don’t go his way, he is too quick to blame the ref.

There are some very emotional calls needed to finally bring the curtain down on some of our warhorse's currently in the squad. I think that's a job for someone outside of the organisation to do, I couldn't see an "insider" having the capacity to do it.

Don’t normally read daily rags, but saw a copy on the Scum and daily titz scum claimed Furner nailed on. Titz said Powell who us unhappy with behind the scenes at Cas. Maybe Powell thinks he has gone as far as he can at Cas, and has unfinished business at Leeds.
But i don't like him and have good reasons.

I agree with this in principle. However, I’m not sure GH has made a calm thought through choice and has someone lined up to come in.. if he has - fantastic. However, the tone and nature of what he has said leads me to think that Caddick has pulled the trigger here. If so we may not be able to get the right man until after the season ends.
