PS I have a MTB (hardly used) but want to do an occassional ride but mainly road with a bit of canal towpath, are hybrid tyres worth geting?

I have got a racer with narrow tyres to alleviate resistance and all that malarky. I have also got a MTB but the tyres make it sound like a Land Rover!

I am fifty next year and fancy doing something worthwhile like the coast to coast to raise some money for a Breast Cancer charity.

I'll be doing the ride on a Dawes Galaxy tourer, a road bike specially adapted for long distance work, low geared like a mountain bike for the hills but with a high top range for the roads and incredible shimano freewheel hubs that mean you don't have to pedal at all if there is even a whiff of downhill on the road.

Its a great bike, I paid a kings ransom for it in 1994 and rode it several times on the Wetherby to Filey ride and then one stupid time from Leeds to Copenhagen, after that I stood at the garage door and flung it as hard as I could to the back of the garage where it has lain ever since - I picked it up a few months ago, blew off the cobwebs and its still in perfect nick, pushed it up Otley Chevin (the hard way) a few weeks ago but other than that its still a superb bike to ride.

The rest of the fools who are doing it are indeed doing it on mountain bikes and they haven't even changed the tyres to slicks - they are going to die.

We are all 53 years of age this year and most of them haven't ridden a bike since they were kids, I've organised this for them but freely admit that I haven't told them how bad its going to be, they all seem to be under the impression that we're having a ride around Roundhay Park and then going for a pint - they are going to die.
