Like Kirke he is a solid squad member and puts in a good shift every time he's on the park. A year deal is a bit strange, like to know what GH is thinking re 2011.

IMO unless you've got players who are going to be coveted by other clubs and who are going to hurt you massively if they go somewhere else, a year or two at the most is about right.

Only a club's "crown jewels", e.g. McGuire, Burrow, Sinfield should be tied to long term deals.

Very good news on ablett IMO

Ablett being 'age free' to move on (without compensation to Leeds) at the end of next season leaves him and his agent with the best earliest opportunity to do so I'd have thought.

I'd be surprised if his next deal is only for a year though.

To be honest I doubt that was the case. Contracts shouldn't be dictated by a players security. It should be dictated by the needs of the club.

They could have given him reduced terms for the 2nd year though.

they should if your the player!! Players arnt totally powerless in contract talks!

I personally don't mind giving players these one year deals.

Ablett probably isn't on great money, he's a versatlie squad player and the one year contract keeps him on his toes to try and earn another.

I suspect the player got the deal he and his agent were looking for in this instance. Although when Hetherington doesn't get his way players tend to move on so perhaps the deal was what everyone wanted all round.

I think that's the key element tvoc,GH is very shrewd in the contract renewal department and i'm sure HE gave ablett the contract he wanted him to have!

A bit of both I suspect - Leeds will not be the only club interested in Carl's services - as mentioned before the next one will be either a long term contract or a move.

Not a big fan of the guy personally so I will be interested to see how he goes.

with the salary cap in place every club needs the abletts of this world, getting more game time than he warrants due to lack of centre / 2nd row but won't be on mega bucks.

Some people are grossly under-estimating how important to the team Ablett has become recently.

He's glue and his 15-20 carries and 30 tackles a game are crucial to what we do, albeit not as eye catching as what others do.

I'd have preferred we signed him longer term as TVOC and Serge say he will be in a great bargaining position at the end of his next deal.

Thats what i can't understand, he is a developing player, maybe this contract is more on abletts terms than appears?
why sign for 3 more years as one of the lower earners, give it a year see what happens.
wigan would not have looked at calderwood or wasps at smith a year before they eventually did. (not on the salaries they ended up with)
not his biggest fan but i wasn't JJB's, but he made the step up. Don't mind being proved wrong in cases like this.

I like Ablett as a player. He's a mobile second row who IMO could develop into a very good one.
