| Terry Matterson has been speaking about McGoldrick to Wigan rumours [url=http://www.wigantoday.net/warriors/Lenagan--Nobby-safe.5013441.jphere[/url.
I wasn't in the press conference after the game on Friday, so it might just be the response to a question posed to him by a Wigan journo, either way:
Quote ="TM"Castleford admit they could be forced to listen to offers for Ryan McGoldrick if Wigan reignite their interest in him.
The Australian star was linked with a JJB switch over the winter and featured in Friday's 28-22 victory over Warriors.
Castleford coach Terry Matterson said: "If Wigan want to come along and offer huge amounts of money then our chief executive may be interested.
"But I don't think Wigan deal the way that they used to do, by paying large fees.
"I've no idea where this latest speculation has come from. Ryan's happy here and he's in the first year of a four-year contract, so we'd have to be talking about a lot of money.
"I don't know whether anything will happen, but I've not seen anything come across my desk regards that."
'"

| What's strange about that. If Wigan make a big cash offer Cas would have to talk. As I'm sure we would if they came in with £500K for Westy/Shenton etc.
End of the day every player has a price. What happens when Saint Helens comes in with a cash offer for Brough? If its big enough I'm sure Wakey would sell him.

I know it's a hypothetical remark, but in reality, I would seriously expect a zero adding to that figure *.
Before accusations of being ridiculous emerge, I'd like to add: that this pair are truly indispensible - local lads/could easily be the two best players in the Northern hemisphere very soon - assuming the club is relatively stable in financial terms, surely only a huge contribution towards a new stadium could ever compensate such a loss.
* I'm not, of course, for a single minute stating any club could/would ever pay such money.

| I think some people (Wakey fans it seems) are missing the point of that extra zero. He's not saying Westy or Shenny are worth £5m, he's asking what is the point in selling our top youngsters for a meager £500k? SL is supposed to be turning a corner with emphasis on home grown kids. To then sell your best kids would be plain daft, especially if we aren't to get that much of a gain from it. £500k would get us another couple of top players or help pay the wages of what we already have, but since you'd be losing a player to start with you're hardly in front. £5m would be a large chunk towards the stadium and future of the club. So he's saying why bother losing our best kids for little gain, especially when us fans are keen as mustard to keep them and it seems the players want to play for us? The only way we should be tempted to lose our best young players is if the offer is crazy money, say £5m.
You could look at it another way. If we can keep producing kids that are worth say £500k and sell them on we'd be set up for life off the cash. But better still, if we could keep producing top kids worth £500k but don't sell them we'd be even better set up for life because we'd have a team full of stars. And that's what we should all be aiming for. Back to that £5m tag, it would be only worth losing your top kids if the price was really worth it.

| ....and i wouldn't sell Goldy either. He's still trying to find that settled position, he doesn't always make the best tackle, he sometimes throws a stupid pass to touch or opposition but i wouldn't swap him. He's Cas through and through, he's a great character to have around the team and fans and he's a sponsors wet dream. I can't remember the last time we got so much publicity from one person, (Dwain Chambers aside). He's in the Sun every other week when most other papers can't even be bothered to mention "rugby" and "league" in the same sentence. I think in one paper our coverage of the Wigan game said "and Wigan entertain Castleford". If it wasn't for Goldy we'd never be in the national papers. Obviously i do want more than just a news story of a player in my squad, but when you couple all that with his determination, (playing when he's bust for example) and skill i wouldn't sell him to anyone. We spotted his potential, we brought him over and no struggling team are going to buy their way out of trouble this time with one of our players!

That's exactly what I meant - not market value, simply what they are worth to Cas as a club.
And in all fairness - I was talking 5m for the pair!

The original post ackowledged that an extra zero just put into some context their worth to the club as opposed to reflecting their market value. That they will soon be two of the best players in GB/France is not out of the question . So what's to get real about.

| Looks a complete nothing statement from Matterson who clearly responded to a journalists question.
However, if there is something in it Wigan must be really desperate cos they'd have to ship out one of their current overseas quota stars to fit McGoldrick in (they had to wait for Carmont to get his Samoan passport and come off the overseas quota before signing Amos Roberts). That would entail the paying of compensation to the dismissed player as well as a sizeable transfer fee to Cas for McGoldrick himself.
