Just thought I would start this in view of swiftys comments on the Wakefield ground topic below, or it could be above.
for me it would be between,
Whitehaven.
Workington.
Barrow,
or going back in time.
Bramley.
Fartown.
Hunslet.
and for me the winner, or loser is.
Fartown.

| Alt Park, Canal St and McClaren field were not great.
Hilton Park and Watersheddings were not great but they didn't half create an atmospere.
Odsal and the Boulevard for the big boys were the worst !!

All the old grounds had atmosphere. Out of all the new grounds the only one I have been to that holds an atmosphere is the KC Stadium.
I still love going to the old traditional grounds - Keighley, Barrow, Workington & Haven etc.

| Old Craven Park with all the dog poo round the back of the stand and then having to go back to the park with loads of s want to kick ten bells out of you.
Huyton - more s, with bricks this time.
Watersheddings - freezing most days.
Crystal Palace - awful.
Workington - worst in Cumbria, and that's saying something.
But it's got to be Odsal, just a big hole in the ground.

| The last time we went to Workington (only time I've been) it was particulary grim due to the weather, the floodlights were swaying heavily and who can forget that big sheet of wood that flew off the stand. Not that Sunshine would have made it look any better.
Barrow has to be the only stadium in the country that can demolish a roof and call it an "improvement".
Odsal is great if you like big wet holes with no soul.
Brewery Field at Bridgend's only saving grace was having a decent clubhouse

We lived in Nottingham for about 12 years and on the day of that game we invited a load of friends and family down for lunch before the game and back to us after.
About 6 car loads came down the M1 in convoy and all met at our house. There was one couple who we didn't know and noticed that they hardly spoke to anyone. Off we went to the game again in convoy, I believe we won 70 something, and then back to our house. Not noticing this couple I asked around who they had come with. No one knew them. Apparently they had just seen these 5 or 6 cars with blue and white scarves out of the windows and followed them thinking they would be led to Nottinghamshire ground. Instead they got a free Sunday lunch.
Wasn't that the game Jason Ramshaw had his jaw broken?

| Bus Vale - water streaming down the changing room walls. Owned by the RFL at the time.
At first team level, that place we played Waterhead at about seven or eight years ago.

| I've resisted posting on this thread for a few days 'cos I have a lot of happy memories of most of the RL grounds I've ever visited really.
I can't understand many people's comments about Watersheddings it was a cracking ground back in the day, the local cup final for the amateurs was a great occassion at easter & depending which teams played out the final there could be a few thousand watching and for those who like a pint after the game the clubhouse on the car park ( run by Paul Round at one time ) was pretty much legendary.
The Athletic grounds at Rochdale Hornets was a bit ropey when it was bad weather but like many other grounds I have fond memories of playing there in my youth, the Old Craven park at Hull KR was similar but I saw some great games there.
Mount Pleasant was almost a different stadium to what it is now back in the 70's, well done to them 'cos I love going there nowadays unlike the York new stadium which is a bit soul-less although I used to enjoy their old ground at Clarence street.
Huyton & Donny were pretty much inhospitable but i always felt sorry for those two clubs they had it rough for many years.
Wakey & Fev were awful, both have made improvements over the years i suppose.
My memories of Odsal are many & varied. I remember going to the "dad's army" test match in around 1979 ish & my dad took me in the ref's dressing room before kick off, I think Mick Naughton was the ref that day, Roger Millward sat pulling on a ciggy looking tense as we passed the Great Britain changing room, that was a tremendous day, most of the Aussies refusing to sign my programme after the game cos they'd been d1cked, Tony Fisher leading from the front. I've also seen many good Fax wins there, I think Graham Garrod once scored a hat trick for us having previously played for them& the facilities have improved completely from the days when we played there & stripped at the top of the hill & had that massive walk up & down those cinders and wooden sleepers to get to the pitch ! Very proud dad moment watching my lad play there a few years ago for their scholars & scoring a few tries at a high standard.
I used to enjoy the old Crown flatt stadium at Dewsbury, McClaren field at Bramley and most of the grounds in those days but I really can't get used to being made to watch games without the choice of standing up at some of the modern grounds although it seems more acceptable at the footy when I go !
