Halifax RLFC Independent Supporters Trust
PRESS RELEASE – 1st August 2011
In light of recent events regarding Halifax RLFC’s failed bid to win a Super League franchise for the 2012-2014 seasons, members of the Halifax RLFC Independent Supporters Trust committee have been inundated with calls and emails of support from all walks of the rugby league community. It is this support that has spurred us into action.
Many have expressed their concern at the events both in the build up to last Tuesday’s announcement and many more surrounding the statements and “post decision” interviews that were issued and given by the RFL hierarchy in the aftermath of Halifax RLFC’s failed Super League bid. We feel the fundamental problem of our game goes much deeper than that, put simply . . . . No Promotion or Relegation.
Therefore the board of The Halifax RLFC Independent Supporters Trust have decided to take a stance. We intend to challenge the integrity, as well as the decisions being made by The Rugby Football League, who without consulting the paying public of our great sport continue to make ambiguous decisions that we feel are not in the best interests of our game. Also this decision is not based on, nor is it a direct attack on any of our fellow rugby league clubs, they can only undertake and look to meet the “franchise criteria” asked of them. Indeed we wish all fellow rugby league clubs the very best of luck during the remainder of this and forthcoming seasons.
However we do feel that our sport is being strangled by the very people entrusted in supposedly driving our sport forward. We feel the RFL through adopting the franchise model in 2009 is killing the game we love and is choosing to ignore the heartlands in favour of expansion at any cost. The current plight of Crusaders coupled with the return to the French League of Toulouse shows that expansion is failing and we already know promotion and relegation is no longer advocated. . . . . Why?
How can our game be a sport without the real possibility of promotion and relegation? – To quote Kevin Sinfield highlighted during an interview with BBC Sport in May 2005, just after the new franchising system was launched "The great thing about sport is competition - relegation is intrinsic to that." - We agree.
What incentive does an ambitious club outside of Super League have if the parameters / criteria of the franchising system keep changing, with new goal posts added or indeed removed at will to suit the RFL hierarchy at that time? The gulf in finances and investment between the top 2 tiers is getting wider and wider and worryingly for any aspiring Super League teams the elite league appears to be a closed shop or at best a masonesque type members club. We have questions a plenty and want answers, not just for Halifax RLFC but for the wider rugby league family on where our game is being taken.
Therefore as an independent voice in support of Halifax RLFC we intend to let our concerns be seen and most certainly heard and we fully intend to challenge the legitimacy of a franchising system that fails to keep to its own “minimum standard criteria” blueprint; more importantly ask why a governing body chooses to strip our game of the true fighting spirit from which it was born out of on 29th August 1895 i.e. Promotion & Relegation.
We are therefore looking to kick-start our “Hate RFL, Love P&R” campaign by staging a protest on Thursday 11th August at the Halifax RLFC v Widnes Vikings game and we invite all rugby league fans to help us to take the fight to The RFL.
Our intention for this event is via the use of banners, flags, t-shirts etc (as the game is live on Sky TV) to voice our concerns. This is merely the start of our battle and it really doesn’t matter if you are a Halifax RLFC supporters trust member; or even a Halifax RLFC supporter or not, join our protest, come along to the game and show the RFL we are to be taken seriously.
What we want and need is a collective, coordinated effort; as we will be much stronger shouting and making a noise together rather than pulling in different directions. We intend to get answers to the many questions we and the rugby league community have. This initial protest will be the mere start, we have lots of ideas but we would welcome input and support from anybody interested in supporting us on this journey.
We will have more news on our plans shortly and we hope you will support us. If you would like to ask any questions or you can pledge support to our “Hate RFL, Love P&R” campaign please contact:-

| I am all for a protest, where / when will t shirts and flags be available.
I hope, however, the protesters don't embarass the club with a pitch invasion, that was mentioned in an earlier post. If we are to be taken seriously the protest needs to be done correctly and within the law.

| The BOD are fully aware of our campaign. Do you really think having raised the club £25k we would go and ruin our relationship without consulting them first??
As an Independent voice of the supporters though we are able to do things slightly diffferent however!! - We will hopefully be holding a public meeting Next Monday in The South Stand Lounge where hopefully a range of Campaign T-Shirts will be available.
Watch this space more info will follow in the next few days.

| Well done. It's about time somebody 'official' stood up for a level playing field. Why not try a Freedom of Information request on the RFL for the minutes of the "Independent RFL Board" meetings in March and July to find out just what decisions were actually taken (and for what reason) prior to each of the two licencing decisions.

| Chris, if suitable funds could be raised by third parties such as ourselves. Would the supporters trust be willing to legally challenge the legitimacy of the licensing process?

| I am all for the strongest possible challenge to the current state of affairs however I am not too sure of the title of the challenge.
Anything beginning with HATE might not be a good idea.
Attaching that to RFL as in "HATE RFL" even though they undoubtably have questions that need answers might smack of being extremist to some of the more moderate persuasion.
Why not just use the "Love Rugby League" statement.
It's positive, shows true intent without being overly aggresive and discriminatory.
Would it be better to have it known as the "Love Rugby League Campaign" or the "Hate the RFL Campaign"
Just a thought.

| What would be even better would be getting in touch with other supporters trusts of the other clubs, Seeing if the club ( halifax rlfc ) would let them in for free or say a fiver, Wearing their own club shirts to show some solidarity in the championships and that its not just bitter fax fans.
To me that statement shown on sky would have a far deeper impact on the RFL and others who are showing a interest.
How good to have 5 or six clubs with 10-15 of their fans in their colours with banners/shirts showing their disapproval.
I have put this in bold as i know if i saw it on t.v i would wonder what the hell are all those different club fans doing at that game !! Then perhaps if other clubs wanted to do the same then 10-15 people could follow the sky games until the end of the season.

| We have had various suggestions for T. shirts so anyone not liking the Hate one doesn`t have to buy the T.shirt. What do people think about
Franchising is for Mcdonalds not for Rugby League.
Also our protest is an orderly and disciplined one , we will not be happy at all with anything like running on the pitch or doing anything detrimental towards the club.
This is about asking questions of the RFL and requiring answers to those questions and campaining for the reintroduction of promotion and relegation.

| The effort and time that has gone in to this is extremely welcoming and I'm glad that some form of group is doing something within RL circles to get a point across.
The tag line however is horrific. 'Hate RFL' does sound very childish and I don't think Halifax fans, a Club who were not given a license, can get away with using that without seeming very bitter about life. Secondly 'Love P & R'. Not even every Halifax fans wants P & R, I didn't realise that was the protest. I thought it was more about transparicy and openness while not changing the rules so often. 'A form' of P & R is/may be the best option but from the tag-line it automatically seems as though we want to get rid of minimum requirements, financial stability etc and just have yearly P & R which I don't think everyone wants.
Whatever you decide though I'll still back it and get involved. Team effort and all that.

| I know it comes down to personal opinion but I really cannot understand why anyone would be against P&R. Its the most fair, sporting, accurate, you name it, way.

| Something needs to be done - however I feel it needs the weight of all the championship clubs behind it. Hate RFL is never going to do that. A steady, measured capaign highlighting messers lewis and wood's weaknesses to allow people to arrive at an inevitable conclusion would work.
Hate RFL will firmly bolt the super league door and I fear, if not careful we could end up looking like the petulent child at school not allowed to play with his mates.
Well done to chris and linda for getting it out there and all your efforts - let's make sure we avoid embarassment and force our club's hand more with this tho. The RFL's deficienies are there for alll to see - let's use them!

Personally I don't think RL is strong enough to have 'simple' P&R which is simply the best going up because of the difference in money, player standard etc. However, that could be down to how the RFL run things and share the money I suppose so the notion of 'simple' P&R could still stand (ergo you are indeed correct), I just don't think that in the current RL climate you could just switch a button and let most teams from the Championship up without it ending in relegation the next year.

Clubs do some to emerge stronger after a certain amount of yo-yoing though going by the examples of Castleford, Huddersfield and to a lesser extent Salford. I don't think there is very much between the bottom three/four clubs in Super League and the top few teams in the Championship.

| Quote ="johnny freeman fan club"We have had various suggestions for T. shirts so anyone not liking the Hate one doesn`t have to buy the T.shirt. What do people think about
Franchising is for Mcdonalds not for Rugby League.
Also our protest is an orderly and disciplined one , we will not be happy at all with anything like running on the pitch or doing anything detrimental towards the club.
This is about asking questions of the RFL and requiring answers to those questions and campaining for the reintroduction of promotion and relegation.'"
i personally think this is fantastic...a peaceful protest to try and get the point across to the rfl...well done
and the franchising is for McDonalds and nt for rugby league made me chuckle.
