| Installing a scanner. I've got the driver file. (.usb, right?) Now I need an idiots guide to what to do with it.
I've got as far as opening the console, I've found my way to the file.... now what?
Cheers.
I will NOT be forced back to Gatesware.

| Here's what I've got to go from:
Instructions taken from Geeks Wasting Time blogpage:
Quote Drop to a shell, cd to the directory you downloaded it to and issue the following commands...
sudo cp PS1Dfw.usb /usr/share/sane/gt68xx/
sudo chown root /usr/share/sane/gt68xx/PS1Dfw.usb
sudo chmod 755 /usr/share/sane/gt68xx/PS1Dfw.usb'"
So I try following them, and get this:
Quote nik@Nik:~$ cd /home/nik/Downloads
nik@Nik:~/Downloads$ sudo cp PS1Dfw.usb /usr/share/sane/gt68xx/
[sudo password for nik:
cp: accessing `/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/': Not a directory
'"
what am I doing wrong?
Thanks

The error is that you're trying to copy the file to either a) a directory that doesn't exist, or b) a path that isn't a directory.
Firstly, what make and model is the scanner,, and what version of Ubuntu are you using? Most modern scanners should be supported out of the box on Ubu these days.

| 12.04 - up to date as far as I can see,
Hewlett Packard Diamond 1200 Plus, aka Bearpaw 1200 CU?. It's a few years old, but it's functional and does what I need. I've also got a Lexmark All In One 1270, but I've been told not to even try to set that one up.
Thanks for your time.

Also
cp: accessing `/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/': Not a directory
the bit gt68xx is generic the xx signifies different versions you will need to check what you have
so in console/terminal whatever type
cd /usr/share/sane
press enter and you will now be in the directory, now type
ls or dir and this should show you the directories in this one, you should see gt68xx where xx is the version
now you can amend your cp command to fit your set up
Regards

Brings up gt68xx as the driver? I thought it was generic, but that's what it says :-/
Again, thanks for the time, I'm off to see if I can work out what's wrong on the Sane link.

| Bugger, that's the one I wanted to use.
Suppose I'd better try and set the Lexmark up then.
