Over the years there have been few novels written against a Rugby League background, either in this country or in Australia. The exception is This Sporting Life, written by David Storey and later turned into a film starring Richard Harris and Rachael Roberts. Less known though is the fact that I have now written four novels in which many of the main characters are Rugby League fans, including the Welsh girl Thelma, born in Tonyrefail, brought up in a home in Cardiff and who drifts north to the fictional Lancashire town of Ashurst in the early Sixties.
