It's no laughing matter. It's just another drag on this country - like most of Southern and Eastern Europe, the beaurocracy and the resultant immigration. That part of the reason for falling living standards here.

That and the gays, of course.

They said similar things about us when Ted Heath took us into the Common Market, over the next ten years this country absorbed a huge amount of EU subsidy and grant money for infrastructure projects (of which the company I worked for was a huge beneficiary, indeed I owe my initial employment to EU money).

Its how the EU works, you invest money into poorer regions and reap the benefits years down the line as they grow more wealthy, its just the planks who can't see that.

More stunningly beautiful Eastern European women can't be a bad thing at all.

Croatia is 90% Christian, so 9 out of 10 of any who do decide to come here will boost the Christian head-count.
Mind you, their entire population is less than that of e.g. Yorkshire, so don't expect a massive swing.

No you throw money at hopeless, peasant economies, create a bubble that bursts and then you have to pay all over again. Think Spain, Greece, Eire for starters.

If you extend that to Britain - look how wealthy those regions have got - so wealthy they no longer need public spending to keep them afloat.

What on earth do you think taxes are for - if there was no need to spend or reserve money for public projects (anything), then there would be no need for taxation and no need for a government - having been "at the coal face" of what were actual coal face regions in the North East and later in South Yorkshire I can categorically state that without huge amounts of EU funding both regions would have dragged this country to its knees in welfare payments alone.

Don't worry Dally, the UK is finished, you have said it yourself a number of times. The Croatians certainly won't be migrating here, QE will probably put them off. What sort of returns will they get on their pensions if they come to the UK? They will probably be more worried about the forthcoming race war in Europe over multiculturalism than think about migrating here.

Anything that helps erode the vain conceit of nationhood is fine by me.

It's quite interesting to note that, in the 19th century, the idea of nationhood was viewed in a generally progressive way.

It's one of those words, like "race", which is pretty much meaningless but everyone thinks they know what it means.

Just about every land border has people either side of it who have as much in common with each other as those of each nation are supposed to have.
e.g. Alsace, Catalunya, Todmorden ...

Mind, those Catalans don't half have a sense of their own nationality ...

It was a step in the right direction at the time, perhaps like it would be in Afghanistan now. Maybe we need a concept of worldhood now. Once that's sorted we'll probably discover life on other planets to exploit and treat with disdain.
