No, I thought I'd link to your preferred rag for a change. I appreciate it's less reliable and despite its name seems to have developed it's own slanted agenda these days but nevertheless the subject is a thought-provoking one.

Is it?
It doesn't even say how many would vote Nazi themselves.
If you asked people in the UK whether the BNP would gain seats in an election, quite a few would say yes.
Doesn't mean they'd vote for them.
As for whether life was "not all bad" under the Nazis, some things, whilst immensely outweighed by the bad, some things would have been good ... full employment, trains running on time etc.

Nothing to do with the fact that Mr Hitler was one of their own?

We are all aware of that.
So was Mozart but they don't all play the feckin harpsichord but, if asked I'm sure they'd say "Yes someone does".

There is no "Central European mindset".
The article did not say how many people said they would personally vote Nazi.
The article didn't even say whether they'd been asked that question.
Hence you are extrapolating from your own notion of what the "Central European mindset" is.
They might be all jackbooted, goose-stepping fascist fanatics ... but the point is that article does not tell you so and, hence, is not "food for thought" in the way you are making out.
By the way, Central Europe isn't just Austria.

| Well, talking of "the central European mindset", I'm off to Lübeck on me own next month – finally all booked after procrastination caused by a combination of work commitments making scheduling difficult, and downright terror.
Herrings and lobscouse and 'Lubecker plettenpudding à la Thomas Mann' ...
If I'm lucky, the spargel season will have started too.

Lübeck was stripped of its centuries-old independence in 1937 by you-know-who, who was pîssed at the city for refusing to let him hold an election rally there in 1932.
Mind, he never forgave Berlin either for never voting for him.

Quite true but the interesting thing is how many think that now compared to say five, ten or twenty years ago.
It wouldn't surprise me if more people think the BNP will gain seats now than some years ago.
It could be the same in Austria re the Nazi's chances at elections. Perhaps it was unthinkable to even suggest it 20 years ago but due to a concern over the re-emergence of the far right perhaps the Austrian poll reflects that.
What we don't have is an equivalent poll from years ago to compare it with.

Same applies to virtually all governments. They are bound to get something right, even the Tories (though not full employment or reliable public transport of course!).

Absolutely. And we need to remember the context where, for instance, a fascist party is on the rise in Greece – because of the economic conditions. It would, in that sense, actually be surprising is fascist parties made no inroads at such times, given what we know are the for reasons for the growth of fascism.

| If we want to talk about the rise/re-emergence of fascism, fine ... but my point was that that article only tells us what Austrians think (fear or approve?) that other Austrians might vote for, not what they would vote for themselves.
