Australia have re-established their policy of offshore immigration centres.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-20422055
There are plenty of remote islands in the UK.
Is this something we should be looking at?
Would certainly stop people vanishing into society whilst their applications are being processed. And it would make it far easier to deport people should their applications fail.

| Australian's are keeping their undesirables on an island offshore? It's a good argument for social cycle theory.

Not if we wish to retain any vestige of civilisation.
Was it not a [url=http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/nov/18/david-cameron-appoints-lynton-crosby?INTCMP=SRCHLynton Crosby[/url idea?

And these people are housed where exactly, or do we just drop them there and leave them to fend for themselves?

| Perhaps we could send ours to Australia's camps instead?

Quifftastic!
On topic, why would we need immigration camps off shore? Successive government policy, and one that is being ramped up currently, is to reduce immigration, largely in response to foaming at the mouth editorials in the tabloid press, as opposed to any proper analysis. Asylum claims are pretty much static now, at around 24000 a year since 2009, compared to 49000+ in 2003 and 84000+ in 2002, so I'd say no, offshore detention camps aren't needed. Unnecessary expense for little benefit.

It reminds me of a 90's film called No Escape.
The island was a prison where inmates were thrown from a helicopter and left to fend for themselves and forge their own societies.
Basically what we did with Australia back in the olden days.

I wouldn't lose much sleep if we did this to all our hardened criminals and sex offenders, but genuine asylum seekers are fleeing this type of thing in the first place.

| As long as they all move out on matchdays, (apart from those buying tickets) I'd reckon the Bulls would be happy to rent out Odsal for the purpose the rest of the time.

The thing is, they are most certainly not all genuine asylum seekers. Some recently even "chose" to go back to where they "fled" as they were going to be processed offshore.
The reason this controversial policy has been brought back, was that they realised that when offshore processing was brought in, the number of boat people dropped a lot. It was actually a deterrent to those economic migrants mixed in with the genuine refugees. When it was abandoned, the numbers of people coming rose sharply. Political parties and opinions aside, the government that got rid of it, have brought it back.
