Yes, I have a view that the Daily Express and its commentators are speaking out of their collective backsides again.
They could pick any city or small village at random, speak to the Job Centre and find plenty of vacancies, anywhere - to then extrapolate that to a policy where every job seeker on benefits should be forced to accept one of those jobs is clearly ludicrous as illustrated by the Daily Express in that verya rticle where they claim that electricians, driving instructors and a deputy head of a school are some of the well paid vacancies on offer.
Quite what your average 18 year odl job seeker is going to do when he/she gets placed into those jobs is one thing that the fookwits in the articles don't whine about.
You can have 10000 job seekers and 10000 job vacancies but you can't force employers to employ people without the qualifications or aptitude to do the job anymore than you can force an 18 year old into an electricians job, although an apprenticeship scheme ( at apprenticeships) would be a good start.

Someone ought to tell the job centre staff that they have vacancies for carpenters, my son has been in there several times since being laid off two weeks ago to be told they have 'nothing'

| One of the 2000 jobs is for Father Christmas at £8.45. I wonder what the hourly rate is for the other 49 weeks of the year???? Now do you understand Dally why no one is getting overly bothered about the deliberate propaganda headline?

One thinks that people qualified to be offered a £100,000 p/a Clinical Oncologist post are not likely to be scratting about the local job .

| Isn't it funny that when it suits them Taxpayers Alliance claim “It is ludicrous that we are paying out so much in jobseekers’ allowance when there are jobs out there waiting to be filled." However on the [url=http://www.taxpayersalliance.com/aboutTPA website[/url it's a total different story "High taxes damage the British economy and our way of life. Burdensome taxation stunts economic growth and tens of thousands of jobs are being lost as huge tax bills reduce incentives to work, invest and save."

The number of vacancies at any one time is pretty meaningless as jobs take time to be filled and are advertised for a certain period of time. There are always going to be vacancies, but most of them are filled from other people already working, who then leave their job and get replaced by someone usually working somewhere else etc.
In the latest Labour Market figures: www.ons.gov.uk:80/ons/dcp171778_279723.pdf there are 475000 vacancies nationally and 2528000 unemployed nationally so the vacancy ratio is 5.3, ie there are 5.3 unemployed people for every job. This has come down from 5.8 a year ago.
This is actually an underestimate of the total number of people not working that could potentially be looking for work as "unemployed" are only those listed as 'actively seeking employment'. But even so if you have 2.5 million people looking for work and only 475k vacancies then its obvious that there aren't enough jobs out there.

Facts have never really troubled silly people or the Express or indeed the Tax payers Alliance nutters.

| I wonder what the anti immigration lobby have to say about this?
With all these jobs going and unable to be filled surely the government needs to relax the laws on immigration, its not as though they are displacing native workers as the jobs are available and unfilled?
We could take a lot more immigrants.

The whole of the current immigration "debate", or as the knee jerkers prefer to call it "problem" began on the vegetable fields of Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire.

| UK net immigration is around 250,000 a year. That's a city the size of Hull.
On a small island, this is unsustainable.
Most people recognise there is an immigration problem. We shy away from discussing it, for fear of being branded racist.

We shy away from it because a lot of people have no clue and rely on generalisations, like many political issues.

When I tried to actually start a serious discussion about it, on here, a year or so ago, you were one of the people who was most obvious by your absence from it. Along with every other poster on here who whinges and whines about the 'problem of immigration'.
IIRC, just two other people were interested enough to make contributions. The thread died very quickly.
