Giving young people a chance to put at least something on their CV, whatever next...

I worked with a bunch of 18-24 year olds about 12 months ago in a scheme called 'pathways', which, instead of berating them for not having a job, teaches them employability skills with a view to finding them jobs in the future.

This is what Tesco are doing, only I daresay because of the sheer size of the company, they will no doubt be giving this opportunity to a damn sight more people than pathways ever were able to.

Anything that gives someone something positive to put on their CVs to both boost future employability and prepare them for the world of work is a fantastic thing, and Tesco should be applauded for this.

If that is what is happening then fantastic but reading the reports (from both sides) they are being forced to work in these places (an Tesco isn't the only culprit) or lose benefit, they are doing menial, boring jobs that no one else wants to do. At the end of it the get an interview, that is it, precious little training beyond how to get your backside out of bed.

Tesco themselves report that they have take 300 people on in 9 months, less than on per store, reports from people forced to work say that they get an interview but there is little chance of getting a job because their role will be filled by someone else forced on to the scheme, Pathways was not perfect but it was way better than this current scheme.

Other culprits apparently include The Guardian (to be renamed The Hypocrite).

As to 'boring, menial jobs' - there is nothing wrong with shelf-stacking for example.

Interesting to note that Tesco are reviewing the scheme after last weekends protests along with:Scope, Matalan, Maplin, Age UK & Poundland

Those who have rejected the scheme include: Sainsburys, TK Maxx, Shelter, Marie Curie, Waterstones & 99p Stores

I trust that extra profits Tesco etc make from this will be passed to the Exchequer in the form of increased taxes

It hardly counts as training for work.

The people "rejected" it as they were worried about reputational damage after the smears by the usual suspects.

It’s amazing what having a connection in high government can do.

It's pleasing to see that workfare is getting a slamming. But it's my responsibility now not to get too involved in this fight against workfare because I’ve got good things going for me at the moment. I need to focus on setting up my project regardless of whenever I get funding or not. Realistically I have all the resources but ideally I’d like to be paid a wage to be taken off the dole. But I’m not prepared to be a romantic idealist at the expense of something that has the potential to be great.

From tomorrow I’m just going to watch the anti-workfare movement from a distance and not get involved. I’ve done my bit and I’m only prepared to do a lot more if I’m given a better platform to express my concerns on.

In all I’m convinced the coalition government deliberately gave corrupt organisations the tools to totally f*** themselves up. It was a given that a strong left wing opposition would completely overwhelm these currupt organisations eventually and that is exactly what’s happening. The likes of Chris Grayling and Ian Duncan Smith are fall guys put in place to help speedup the downfall by making outrageous statements defending the policy.

Damo - like your blog! In our experience, small charities run on shoestrings have been very helpful over the years. More recently we've come across larger ones which provide good information, etc. The ones that are truly, truly useless and downright scum though are the instruments of local government that are supposed to help - education, social services and more widely, sections of the NHS.

I agree with all your comments with regards to the charity sector.

When I’ve done activism against certain organisations I’ve sometimes found myself disagreeing with some of my actions. For example I’m a tad ashamed that I tarred the National Autistic Society with Mencap. NAS are more of an information service whilst Mencap are a full on disability exploitation service. Ok NAS are associated with charities/organisations that I absolutely despise such as Remploy. But I do reckon when the times right NAS will publish information on people like myself who’ve had a bad service by this lot. The same happened when I tarred the Princes Trust with a4e.

But I’ve since built bridges with the Princes Trust and currently in negotiations with them to have a twenty minute slot on my podcast so they can talk about unemployment from an experts angle.

In all I’m excited about my possible career in the third sector but I’ve realised I must choose the right things to do and work with the right people for it to be fruitful. It’s all in my hands

It's bollix on a couple of grounds.

Firstly, as has already been shown, the government doesn't pay anything to illegal immigrants. There is a clue in there somewhere for you Dally. It starts with 'Ill' and ends in 'egal'.

Secondly, a version of this was posted on here a while back and was torn to pieces, along with pointers as to it's origins (Either US or Australia, I forget). The odd thing is, I thought you posted it then too? Perhaps not, it may have been Titan or someone else.
