| Hi,
I posted a thread last week about the best place to sell a used car....anyway, i advertised on Facebook Marketplace and a guy in the USA would like to purchase it.
Apart from the obvious Right Hand Drive issues etc, are there any other things the guy will need to consider that he may have overlooked, or may not know about. I want this to go through smoothly so want to highlight the details he will need to address
Cheers

Does he realise you are not in the USA? I ask because I was once asked in the USA where I was from. To make it easy I replied "London, England". To which they response was "Did you drive?". I said I had considered it but thought the Atlantic Ocean might prove difficult, so decided to fly.
Whose going to pay for the shipping?

I have said I was in the UK, as i told him i needed to enquire with the DVLA about what happens with the V5C form. The person wants me to send my address to him so that he can get a shipping quote from Hull to Michigan!
Just wanted to know if there were any differences in the Petrol here and in the US which may be problematic for the car etc really

| The first hurdle will be exhaust emissions, the US operates different standards to EU.
Then you've got the problem of shipping. The car would most likely need to be containerised, export documents produced, insurance provided etc etc etc
Without wishing to put a damper on your "sale", I'd get back in touch with the potential buyer and suggest that he makes enquiries from his end.

| Wouldn't you be best contacting one of the international shipping companies? I reckon shipping would be around a grand, but they'd know chapter and verse and while they probably have info on websites, I wouldn't be holding yourself out as some sort of advisory expert when in fact you presumably know nothing about it? Why not just let the buyer make their own enquiries and arrangements?

IIRC there is space on a V5C for "Permanent Exportation"
There should be no problems with fuel quality that can't be overcome by tuning/re-mapping

| Im not attempting to advise the end user on the ins and outs of exporting the vehicle, i just wanted to potentially point out a couple of thigns they may need to check. All costs incurred will be his, and they have already said they will check the shipping costs.
I cannot believe it is more cost effective to buy this from me than it is to simply buy one from the US

I'm having some trouble with that. It's cheaper to buy mint vintage British made motorbikes in the US than it is to buy replacement bulbs for the indicators over here.

I admit that it looks a bit odd but cannot see what the scam is, if there is one!

| I'd kind of assumed this was some sort of rare model not generally available over there?
What is it, then?

Perhaps, but I can't see why a 1.4 207 would be so desirable (no offence!) as to go to the trouble and costs of importing.
A 1.2 Clio is probably rare in the States but I can't imagine many are imported.
It could be legit but I'd still stay well clear if I were you.

| Peugeot did pull out of the States some years back and so that will obviously have cut off the supply of used motors. Maybe not a scam, then? I'd still want the money in the bank first

I have told the buyer that i would want the funds in my account via paypal before i release the car. The DVLA stated that if I write to them saying who i sent it to and when, then they will send a letter saying that the vehicle is no longer my responsibility as of the sell date.
Surely, if it is a scam, this should not be my problem after this?

Just a guess, but does he want to pay by Western Union?

One PayPal scam works like this:
1. Payment is confirmed as made
2. You sell the goods.
3. Buyer tells Paypal it was an unauthorised payment.
4. PayPal reverse the transaction, you have no money, no goods, and a hard road looming ahead.

How could i prevent this scam from occurring (apart from not selling the car)??
Withdraw the paypal funds, keep records of all emails and documents etc.

| Shipping wise he's gonna be looking at around £1200. Plus the cost of transporting it half way across the country.
It's got to be a scam. Had it been a rarer/ vintage car I could of understood him going through all the hassle and cost's involved. But in this case it's screams danger signs.

| Unless you are getting a very favourable price, I'd forget it.
There are too many potential risks and you've got all the extra work. You may lose the car and not get paid, you may have a psycho getting hold of your bank a/c details and address, do you know the law in the US on this sort of thing? For all you know if the car gets used in a crime / terrorist event you may have some liability and may get an expenses paid trip to Cuba. Wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole myself.

| have a look at this forum. there is even a sub section on used car scams.
[urlhttp://www.scam.com/index.php[/url
seriously why would somebody want to buy a car such as yours and incur the legal and shipping costs attached? I would have thought the figures involved in doing this would be pretty high as a percentage of the car price.
another.....

The better the price the better chance it is being a scam.
