An excerpt from The Barrier newspaper:


[iLondon Shop Raided by Thieves in Motor Car

While Bethnal Green road was thronged with shoppers on Christmas Eve, a yellow touring car containing five men pulled up opposite the shop of Mr Henry Gandee, a one-armed jeweller. The men smashed a window and fled with jewels worth £500.

While two men kept off the crowd with iron bars and revolvers, others smashed the shop window.

Mr Gandee seized the hand of one man, but another robber grabbed a tray of rings and diamond pendants.

Mrs Gandee tried to rush out to intercept the thieves, but a third man held the door and prevented her opening it.

The number plate of the car was covered with a sack, but onlookers were able to give a description of the vehicle to the police. [/i

Yet another shocking example of moral decline in modern times.

The only thing that surprises me is how dumb some people can be engaging in theft on a high street covered in cctv from a shop that will have its own cctv and alongside a bus that will also have its own cctv, the number of riot arrests last summer seems not to have got through the skulls of these dumb criminals that you might run away from the scene of the crime but they'll just come around to your house later and pick you up.

Especially if your swag is a bag of Tesco rice that you're happy to pose for photos with.



But seriously, CCTV etc has been used to catch the perpetator of the attack on the Malaysian student during last summer's riots, as well as the people who robbed him while appearing to help. Anyone doing something in full view of CCTV should have a sentence increased for being totally stupid.

I did go to the effort of walking upstairs at the weekend to dig out a book which includes the government statistics that would bear out my comments starkly. However, said book has been taken off-site and I am not prepared to spend months re-researching what others have already done. At some point I may be able to retreive the text and if I do, I shall respond fully.

I think he thinks he's right about our society degenerating, it's the whole, "I had the evidence but it appears to have gone missing" thing that seems rather dubious. Smacks of "the dog ate my homework" just a tad.
