I was surprised that the gay marriage question was raised by a voter at a recent house party with our local Tory MP. It was a huge issue to the guy and he did not like the idea one little bit. I'd imagine there's a lot like him around the country. They may be a minority but it's a very big issue to them.

It's always perplexed me as to why people regard it as a big issue. I'd have said that crime, the economy and education were "bigger issues", not the fact that two people who have no connection to me want to have some form of equality in their lives.

If only people got themselves into such a lather about important stuff.

Indeed. Some of the comments on the [iTelegraph[/i website in recent weeks have been hysterical – in more ways than one. There seem to be people out there who really believe that the issue of gay marriage will create something close to revolution.

I also wonder if there's an element of "Methinks they doth protest too much" in some of the right wing ravings.

What, specifically, about that photo tells you that Rep Wyatt is gay? His fairly normal looking suit? His unremarkable haircut? His purple tie, perhaps? It could be the smile, I suppose: they're always smiling, them queers.
