Look at the photo that's ridicule enough. At the end of the day, people in government and local aithorities are responsible for making decisions that allow that to be served up. They should ALL be ridiculed and hounded out of office. It's disgusting and those same people will be wasting money on nonsense like awarding schools (probably including that one! a "healthy eating award" and also hectoring the public about their poor eating habits that costs the NHS billions....

What all these idiots lack is an ounce of decency and common-sense.

I do not whinge about bullying, just point out that it happens on here and usually derives from those who like to think of themselves as good little liberal minded souls.

But, yes people in public office who self-serve and waste resources on a grand scale with daft schemes should be removed from office either through the ballot box or, where they have executive office, by other means. Why should the public, who elect and pay them to provide a real service, be subjected to such contempt? It's corrupt and farcical. Trouble is most people haven't got the guts to stand up to them and expose them for what they are.

That reminds me, must get back to emailing our highways department over the pointless and hideous road signs they erected recently, have already had to fix twice due to my mocking them, etc and this week, since my last correspondence, have even re-sited one (in a more practical but even more pointless place). £3,000, if I recall, they wasted putting them up and about once a fortnight they have to get the contractors back after I have pointed out their deficiencies. Good to see public money being wisely spent when there are old folks needing care. But, hey, that's a different budget isn't it? That, of course, makes it alright.

I'm a bit torn on this to be honest. I can see where the school are coming from in trying to protect their employees, but I think it could have been done in a better way. For a start by attacking the utterly rubbish reporting of it in that pathetic excuse for a newspaper rather than the child.

Then, if this girl is showing some initiative in setting up a blog etc then encourage it. Help her with the blog, show her how to set out a basic article, give her a quote for her blog putting the schools side of things. It might be the start of a brilliant journalistic career. Far too often we decry and put down our children's efforts instead of encouraging.

On the other hand quite what a 9 year old girl is doing with a phone (im assuming the pictures were taken off a camera phone) in school, I have no idea.

My word, what a clever little boy / girl we are.

Have any of you actually read the blog or just read the news story?

If you read the girls blog, it is very fair to be honest.
It is not a blog criticising her school dinners at all, it's a blog rating her school dinners on her own scoring system, taste, nutrition, no. of mouthfuls etc.

She also recieves comparisons from across the globe.

Quite a few of her ratings are rated as 10/10. To be honest she praises as many meals as she criticises.
It's obvious A&B council haven't read it either and have simply had a knee jerk reaction to a rag's headline.

At least they have decided they made a mistake and have allowed her to continue to take her pictures.

Well done A&B on being big enough to admit that they're in the wrong.

I think it's a great idea, all schools should encourage it, and the grading of lessons/learning outcomes, might shake a few people out of their comfy brogues!

Ah right, the main issue is some of these councils have remote locations and A&B along with Highlands have some of the most widespread locations in the country, is that they have to compete with the local chippy, fast food joint and burger van and it really wouldn't take a lot of defections to make a school lunch service unviable.

Also I think we have realised that the "you'll sit there till you've finished that" attitude has caused more problems that it cured.

Mind the way they work out the menus making every single meal nutritionally balanced rather than a balance across the week is bloody insane.

Why does you knowing who I am matter on a public forum, or was that supposed to be a subtle dig?

On the rare occasion I read this section I remember Dally as a dissenting voice, of which I usually disagree. I'd take him over bullies like you though.

The fact that the children get quite a few choices for school dinners now seems to be something that a number of friends who are talking about this have mentioned, as well as on here. I find it utterly bizarre how many people seem to be of the "why do children get so many choices, we didn't" school of thought.

Surely it's a good thing that we're well by the days of "here's your meal, now eat it" regardless of what that meal was and the child's opinion of it? That kind of attitudes towards children and food just gives people life long issues. There's nothing to be proud of when little johnny had to sit at school dinners and eat the macaroni cheese because that was the days dinner when he simply threw it up afterwards.

Yes, some parents give their children too many choices. However surely if we want children to grow up with a healthy attitude to food then the best way to go about that is to give a little respect to the fact that there are some things that some people just won't like (and some days where you just want a snacky lunch and others you want a big lunch). Also there are some things that some cooks just can't make - I love macaroni cheese, alway have done, but to this day I have no idea what our school cook used to do with it. It was the most vile thing I've ever eater in my life. No good would have come of making that the only meal of the day.


The biggest problem with school dinners, imo, is the finance issue. Our local primary school has a huge certificate on the wall in the dining hall stating that their "catering manager" won the award for being the most efficient with her budget. She won a stonking prize for it as well. Personally I think the fact that she managed to save a couple of grand a year in food should see her hauled over the coals because she did it by serving crap food, smaller portions and, most ridiculously, running out of hot food before the end of the serving leaving children with no choice but sandwiches in the midst of winter.
