The thing is, they are most certainly not all genuine asylum seekers. Some recently even "chose" to go back to where they "fled" as they were going to be processed offshore.
The reason this controversial policy has been brought back, was that they realised that when offshore processing was brought in, the number of boat people dropped a lot. It was actually a deterrent to those economic migrants mixed in with the genuine refugees. When it was abandoned, the numbers of people coming rose sharply. Political parties and opinions aside, the government that got rid of it, have brought it back.
