London was implanted with northerners up until the start of SL. Then we got the same allowances to play crims for a few years and given LMS and Clubb were 9/10yrs old and are now England internationals.......born within the sound of the bells (cockneys).....yes, it is working. It's just not quick enough for some. Gone are the days of Offiah jumping ship and here are the days of londoners in every age group england/GB league squad....
Wales will take 10+ years to get there but the won't get there without a senior pro team.....but feck'em...let's get a small pit village back into the top tier.....

c'mon dude. 20 years in sport is a starting point. I got grief somewhere else for saying ten years - thats a blink of an eye. Sports develop in generations. Did Cumbria and castleford get up to speed in 2 minutes. Its only the toughness of the sporting market that means any serious development needs to be done with the crusaders in the superleague. In the past i would have been happy for us to be in the lower leagues for at least 5 years (and i enjoyed the time we did spend their enormously).
Also welshness is a little more complex then just welsh born players. If you can catch the clip of shane howarth (who turned out not to even have a welsh granny) when he was playing for wales rugby union you will get an inkling of what i mean. The welsh like having an emotional attachment to the sportsmen that represent them but that develops in a more obscure way. Just as long as they are beating the crap out oif the english.

Why do you feel the need to perpetuate this assumption that we all want Celtic removed from SL because of this affair ?

Most posters on here apart from one or two total loonies understand why they need to stay in SL and that they will most likely not survive outside SL if history is looked at

So why are those '90% of dissenters' posting on the Crusaders RLFans board and not emailing the RFL?

You wouldn't be plugging up the Crusaders' boards with vitriol. You'd be writing to the very people you say you have a problem with instead, thus allowing the Crusaders fans to get on with their chat without being trolled to death.

And you think they would reply ?

They might do. You won't know unless you try. And think. If all the so-called dissenters on here - or the 90% of them you refer to - emailed the RFL en masse then they would be blitzed by emails. cc Sky and you'd be laughing.

And meanwhile, the Crusaders fans could just get on with chatting about their club without being buried by trolls. Which I'm sure the fans of Leigh and every other club would prefer for their own boards.

Workington were the League Champions in only their 5th year, and won the Challenge Cup in their 7th year. HTH.

thats a great achievement. what year did they enter the championship and were they playing rugby league before then?

They entered the RL Championship in 1945 at the end of the war and won it in 1950/51 season.

Prior to that there had been no professional RL anywhere in Cumberland. Workington were the first club and Whitehaven joined the league in 1948.

Barrow had of course existed before then but Barrow was in Lancashire until 1974.

what was the amateur scene like prior to that? had any foriegn teams toured? Genuinely interested. Are there are any cumbria rugby league histories knocking about?

My Dad reckons they were one of the greatest teams to play the game of Rugby League he ever saw.

The problem with growing old is, what people today call history, you remember as yesterday. You talk about Workington in the late forties, and who led it? None other than Gus Risman born in Cardiff. He recruited ' Ginger' Hughes from Barrow to organise the forwards. Hughes came from Llanelli, and had a son called Emlyn-average footballer I believe.
Buy 'The 'Indomitables' it covers the '46 tour of Australia and New Zealand published by London League publications. It gives you the state of the game at the end of the war, and there are pen pictutes of all players who took part.
There were often up to ten Welshmen in a side of the top rugby league teams in the forties. By the way we used to beat overseas teams at that time. A very good reason for having a Welsh team in the league.

Rickets, tuberculosis and diptheria were all big around that time too, along with the Germans invading half of Europe

Last weeks Celtic match against Leeds. I seriously think if you plucked 13 RL enthusiasts out of the crowd at Newport and gave them all Celtic jumpers they would have put up a better show than Celtic did

The support of Celtic Crusaders is a separate issue as playing and watching are two different problems

You know there are thousands of registered rugby players in Wales already. Though both games are not the same, to do a conversion job is quite feasible for most of them.

In Bridgend for instance Wales' greatest rugby school (and on 2 occasions BRITAIN's reatest rugby school) now has far more take up for RL than it has for Union.

As a typical example, the Evans brothers who singed for Warrington youth (and have played for England but apparently will be representing Wales henceforth) came out of Brynteg (before the Cru youth scheme took off).

And as regards the 1940s producing not only huge Welsh representation in English club sides, but such illnesses as rickets and diptheria, well the former can be seen as a "good thing" and the latter two as a "bad thing".

Because of when these conditions were commonplace, would you also ban WD-40, nylon, radar, jet turbines, spam?
