| Quote ="el red"The argument that "the big teams get away with everything" is simply not true. When was the last time you heard our fans shout "Forward" when we have thrown one, it just does not happen. As fans we are conditioned to look for decision errors against us whilst ignoring our own errors, it's just human nature. I'd rather concentrate on supporting the team than bagging the refs, other teams and their fans. When did you last hear us applaud an outstanding try from the opposition, I seem to recall it happening a lot against touring teams and this just highlights how one-eyed and tribalistic we all are.'"
When I watch Rovers it's from the east stand or an away ground and I cannot see everything I must admit, but as a Sky subscriber I tend to watch 95% of televised games, which is where I base my opinion on.

| Ganson's position would probably be untenable if there was a queue of other possible/qualified/suitable candidates. As it is, there isn't - so his job is probably safe and therein lies the problem with officiating right across RL in this country.

| As a Sky subscriber, I tend to find the officiating at a decent level in most televised games. Strangely enough I think they're inept after a Hull game when we've been on the wrong end of 50/50 decisions, and I thought they were tip top this last weekend.
Strange that.

| There has been much talk of accountability and transparency. With that in mind I think that Steve Ganson should be put infront of the cameras and made to view the footage and explain exactly what his thought process was and who he was actually tracking.
I am of the opinion that he should lose his job but lets see what he has to say first. The sad and quite frightening thing is that the officials department will be weaker without his knowledge and experience. Maybe some good can actually come from this in the end and the RFL pump extra resource into ref recruitment and improving standards.

| What would have been interesting is if Ganson talked his way though the decision live on air as he has been doing with the BBC. Anyway it's business as usual with the RFL/Super League as Ganson has been named as VR for the Huddersfield v Saints game next Monday.

| The simple answer is to not leave this down to one person, why didn`t Thaler question the decision as he stood and watched what everyone else watched on the screen....so some blame should also fall on him....

| GANSON MUST NOW DO THE ONLY THING HE CAN AND FALL ON HIS SWORD. EVEN A BLIND MAN WOULD OF NOT MADE THAT MISTAKE. WHEN FANS GO TO GAMES NOW BETWEEN TO EVENLY MATCHED TEAMS THEY ARE NOT THINKING ABOUT THE OPPOSITION ANYMORE BUT ABOUT WHAT SIDE OF THE BED THE REF GOT OUT OF IN THE MORNING. MANY FACTORS COULD HINGE ON THE RESULT, HAS THE REF HAD AN ARGUEMENT WITH HIS MRS FOR INSTANCE. DID HE FORGET TO PAY HIS GAS BILL. DID HE FEED THE DOG BEFORE HE LEFT FOR WORK. ITS SCARY WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. WITH SECONDS TO GO AND ROVERS NEEDING A TRY I WOULD INSTRUCT CRAIG HALL TO STAND UNDER THE POSTS AS DOBSON DOES AN UP AND UNDER FROM THE HALF WAY LINE. IF THE VIDEO REF IS GANSON AND STILL HAS NOT VISITED SPEC SAVERS WHO KNOWS!!

| Bejezzus. It's over. Done. Move on.
Nothing further will be done with Ganson, and rightfully so, it was a mistake. They happen unfortunately. Sometimes they cost more than other times, but no matter how much improving happens, human error will still always be there.
Incidentally, the day we have a perfect human-less game, it will become a complete bore. I'm an F1 fan, and would be the first to say that sport is afflicted by its own perfection at times.

| Couple of tweets from Steve Ganson this evening as part of the weekly Q&A with the panel of referees:
RFL Referees @RFLReferees
I’ve reviewed my decision and I admit that I made the wrong call. SG
I have spoken with the coach and chairman of Hull KR and my conversation with them will remain private. SG

It has to be realised that I reckon about 75 per cent of referees are wannabee rugby players but they were never good enough.
All thanks to them though for trying to get involved in the game.
But what is obvious is that most referees have some sort of ego or try to excercise some sort of dominance . A lot of Refs like to be noticed or even to be the centre of attention because as I said most refs were not good enough to play rugby.
Having said all that when we analyse the mistake that Ganson made last weekend that wasnt about referee skills, it was sheer stupidity or maybe some sort of mental failure. It wasnt about refereeing ability.

I think it would be a good idea if he stepped away from completely from officiating now, even as a VR. Another one even half as bad and his credibility as custodian of standards, already pretty ragged, will be in tatters before he's even properly got his feet under the desk.
I don't see any point in any sort of witch hunt - it is gone now and we need to ensure officiating is something that people continue to want to do. When things have calmed down a bit, they need to look to see if there anything that can be done to the system to improve things - another ref on the pitch or in the booth, perhaps.
Changing tack a bit, I rewatched the end of last year's game to ease the pain.
Now obviously I'm very biassed and Lovegrove's pass was definately forward (though if Lynch had done his job and wrapped the ball up... ) , but it struck me how different in looks from different angles. From the main fixed camera, on Rovers right and behind the play it looks miles forward, seeming to come out at almost 45-degrees from Lovegrove's hands. But that is in part due to foreshortening. You get a clearer idea of [ihow[/i forward it is from the camera behind the in-goal area, which is closest to Ganson's view, but we have the advantage of looking down from a decent height. 'A yard - yard and a half' is Eddie's (IMO reasonable) estimate, but it goes sideways maybe 5 yards. From where he is stood, I can just about see that he might have needed help from his touch judge - and the camera of the far touchline, up with play shows clearly that he should have got it. It was wrong, but IMO SG himself probably deserves a pass on that one.

Whatever their psychological flaws, whether they were weaned too early, or not all, they're as crucial to the game as players. We [ineed[/i to be nice to them. Well, nice-ish.
