before McDonalds every town had a Wimpy burgers - but they weren't franchises - just people associated burgers with Wimpy.

I don't understand the concept of a hamburger without beetroot, and fried onion with vinigar. Without those, it's just a rissole on a bun.
The funny thing about McDonalds is that Aussies hate their 'pickles', and in the early years they wouldn't serve them without the pickles, so it became a national sport to flick pickles at the windows of McDonalds, and even now when you can ask for no pickles, many people just get them to flick at the windows.
