A couple of seasons ago Hull had a far more impressive victory against a much stronger Saints side at the KC and the matchwinner was a one Tommy Lee. Though i suppose there is always the chance the Saints S/H was smacked up to the tits at the time
IMHO Hodgson has more potential than Houghton but thats not saying Houghton is poor and if you read that thread you'll also see i said given the choice i'd have BOTH in my team as they both bring different qualities

| a poor game with 2 poor sides today, we defended well against a team without a clue IMO. the game was played in mostly our own half. Dobsons try flattered the scoreline.

Blimey . Good result for Rovers in that you were never troubled then on the back of that.
What has happened to Sherwin? On the face of it you'd think him and Bosc would be a decent enough partnership behind a big pack.

I can see your weekly giro is undeserved.
A role as a pundit or bookmaker awaits.

| Defensively we were very good against a catalans side that looked devoid of ideas. First half I thought the ref hammered us and let cats get away with the self same offences, 2nd half we were our own worst enemy and spilled a lot of ball. I think we barely got to the 5th tackle all game.
On a positive we played a very big pack that penalties aside seemed to struggle to make yards against us, and seldom brok the line. A few shoots of optimism but a long way to go yet.
As for Sherwin, he was anonymous, I assume he was signed to take a load of Bosc but he did very little and they struggled to create anything.

He won't be far off.
It just goes to show how well we actually did as Les Cats must have had 60% of possession with persistent poor decisions from Smith giving them attacking chances. I fail to see how we were that much dirtier than Cats yesterday, they seemed to get away with some real dirty stuff, yet Smith constantly blew up for the slightest thing against us.
I was impressed with the way our pack dominated theirs, but I think we were watching two very poor sides yesterday and if we play EXACTLY to the same level against Wire, we are in for a thumping.

| That was the worst win I've seen Rovers post since joining SL. The condidtions were ok up to the last quarter, yet both sides dropped a lot of ball. Smith wouldn't let the game flow, and Catalans showed exactly why they are bottom of the league. The loss of Pelo in the 1st half didn;t help them, but they were clueless even before his departure.
After watching Quins destroy Crusaders last night, I think its safe to assume that a monumental improvement is required if we are to win our next home game (I've already written off Friday's game even allowing for Wire's 13-man international call up!).

I fail to see how our pack dominated the catalans pack.
60% posession in favour of the cats and a large percentage for the terrirtory also, if this is how you define dominating a pack then i fear for us big time, we get dominated by most of the bigger teams in the fact that we are a fairly small team , we are desperately in need of some more size and bulk in our forward line and to be honest i think this should be of more concern than getting another half back right now.

Agreed, i think we need a player in the mould/type of O'meley(?) someone coming off the bench who is going to run hard, push back the defence and rough some people up.

Perhaps the way we "handled" their pack is more accurate than "dominated".
I was happier with our efforts defending our line than with the early try scored, but we will need to be a lot better with the ball on Friday because we would not have kept a better attacking side like Warrington out for so long.
Overall we were OK but we've been here before after a thrashing. We need to be "solid" in attack and defence for the full 80 minutes to put a run of wins together, something we've struggled with all season.

Have to say i agree to a certain extent and the fact Rovers will have pretty much the same pack of forwards for the next season or two must be a worry to some fans. Had Cats discipline been better with and without the ball they would probably have won and the final scoreline flattered Rovers enormously i thought.
Though Rovers clearly defended better they would surely have been turned over by most SL sides.

Agreed. The props we have seem to be more suited to a war of attrition, gradually grinding down the opposition. That might work if we were virtually error free and had a high set completion ratio but usually we don't.
We have no impact from the bench, no-one who is going to shake things up with a bullocking run or smash someone into next week and Fridays game at Hull shows the importance of having that quality in the team.

| Individually i thought we had some decent performers although as a team the timings all looked a little off. Defensively we looked far more sound but it has to be said that the Catalans threw very little variety at us. Our much criticised pack stood firm against their Catalans counterparts and undoubtadly won the battle, though i wouldnt have classed them as "dominant."
It is clear to see that confidence is an issue at the moment and i think that is why Morgan was so upbeat after the game in his interviews, he is trying to instill it back into his squad. One good win and it will come flooding back. We have the players. Lets hope it is this friday.

Unfortunately that type of payer demands top dollar and in Clinton Rovers have their 'O'Meley' type player both in terms of what he brings to the team and the chunk he takes from the cap. That said i don't think Rovers are getting the best out of Joel and could use him better. Rather than starting with him i'd use him as an impact player off the bench purely becasue of his size. I would sacrifice the extra yard per carry he makes early in the game for damage he could do in a couple of 15/20 minute spells from the bench.
With the current batch of props I would start with two from Vella, Watts or Wheeldon at who have the best techniques in terms of body position, finding the floor and quick PTB. They are also have the best tackling techniques of all the props and are tighter at marker and at A defender. They would therefore provide Rovers with a solid foundation early in the game. Clinton and Lovegrove would provide Rovers with genuine impact from the bench as both are capable of punching holes in defences and would be more likely to achive this in the second quarter of each half than the first.
