No point in playing average sides like last week (no real disrespect intended to Hull) which only serves to lull everyone into a false sense of security.
By playing a top side like Warrington it gives us a much better idea of just where we are at currently and what needs to be done to reach the standards required to compete at the top.
To be honest I half expected to get beat convincingly today though not quite thus admittedly, winning today with so many new players only playing their second game together and against a side like Warrington, who in my opinion will still be at the top or thereabouts by the end of the season was always going to be a big ask.
Having said that there are some worrying signs that need to be addressed very quickly, especially it seems in defense, it will be interesting to hear what Chris Chester had to say in his after match comments.

Chester will have learned more about the side from a hiding at Wire than if we'd bullied a lower league side with a strong team, it's got nowt to do with confidence. If we want to compete in this division we need to "man up". Today will have showed the team and staff how far off we are, and it sounds like a long way. No point going into the Leeds game being deluded, we have enough deluded fans without the squad joining in.

Tbf, aspiration among fans on both sides on KuH RL divide seems to be realistic and limited to making the top 8. I don't think I've seen a fan of either suggest their team will make the play-offs. Campese said it's what Rovers should be aiming for, but today may have brought home the reality of what Craig Sandercock used to refer as the 'team full of internationals'. For us the slight mitigation is that Wire are a team that will expect to make the play-offs. For Hull, at least it was 1 part first-team, to 2 parts fringe squad members. But if there is a third league derby, I'd guess right now that'd it be in amongst fixtures against London, Bradford and Leigh.
Still, s'only pre-season innit? No need to get too disheartened yet.

Yes I think you are right.

Today was certainly a wake up call for me, I wasn't expecting us to challenge the big boys but I did hope that we would no longer have to suffer performances as insipid as today's.

All the talk of changing culture and attitudes had me thinking that at least we would be able to do that. I really didn't give a fig whether we won or lost today but we didn't need our bubble bursting in quite the manner it was and even before the season starts.

But as you say better our weaknesses were exposed by playing Warrington than hidden by playing a weaker team.

Even after seeing us blown away today I still don't think it's quality we are lacking particularly. Warrington did everything at a quicker pace, had more energy, more aggression and more willpower. By comparison we were flat or as you put it couldn't 'man up'.

We may or may not beat Leeds but today's exposure of the truth gives us a better chance of being ready for them than if we had remained in blissful ignorance.

I've a feeling we may up the tempo and give Leeds a shock often this happens after a flat performance but I fear consistency will be elusive again.

I agree with you Stan. We needed to find out what kind of a team we have this year. Unfortunately it looks like a team of the same failings from the Sandercock era. Friendly aside, no way should we of been trounced the way we did today. Chester must be very, very disappointed by this effort, and with the injuries to boot.
This defeat was exactly what was not needed either from the marketing side of things. We are trying to sell out the Lightstream, and floating supporters will only say "new year, same old Rovers" and could turn them off. Sandercock had an art of turning optimism into despair, and I hope that hasn't rubbed off on Chezzie.
