| Quote It is widely reported that the phrase originates from the town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England. There, since as early as the 12th century, two teams from opposite ends of the town play a rough and tumble football/rugby type of game called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match. The match is between the 'uppers' and the 'downers' - townspeople from opposite sides of the river that runs through the town. The object of the game is to get a painted leather ball into the opposition's goal by fair means or foul. You might get a flavour of the scene from the fact that the goals are three miles apart and that one of the (few) rules is that 'unnecessary' violence is frowned upon. This type of game used to be common on feast days throughout England, and this example is still played out annually at Ashbourne.
In normal circumstances evidence linking an event with a phrase having a 900 hundred-year pedigree would be persuasive. Unfortunately, there's nothing apart from local folklore, which is always present when locals lay claim to a phrase, to link the phrase to the town or to the Shrovetide match. After all, the phrase isn't 'a local Ashbourne'.
The actual source is more prosaic. The Derby is the name of the premier horse race in England and the contest was founded by the twelfth Earl of Derby in 1780. Since at least as early as 1840 'derby' has been used as a noun in English to denote any kind of sporting contest. A local derby is just a sporting contest between local rivals.
Early uses of the phrase referred to football (soccer) matches and the first printed citation appears to be the Daily Express, October 1914:
"A local Derby between Liverpool and Everton".
Such matches between the two clubs are still energetically contested. Many other clubs in this and other sports now meet to contest their own 'local derby'.'"

| My ideal derby would be for them to outplay us, the ref to make some 'terrible' decisions in our favour and for us to win it in the last seconds with a forward pass and a knock on over the line, but the ref NOT to go to the video ref. I love to hear them whine.

True, but Sandercock is a mere amateur compared to Trevlovesjanice after Disco Dave's touchline frolics last year.

| At least George is available which is a bonus he is a decent winger and someone i hope we go for when Sandy realises his "project" Caro is useless. Personallyheard Tuima is back the week after and he is someone we have missed just a no thrills prop who makes few mistakes. Personally i've written O'Hara and Gleeson off and hoping both won't be here next year, Salter has been one of our most consistent players and Beaumont and Walker don't look out of place at all

I disagree. The earlier the better, then whoever loses can sulk off home while its still daylight.

| No playing the "injury" card then, Hull have as many out as we do. I'd go with:
Hall
George
Salter
Welham
D Hodgson
Burns
Dobson
Tuimavave
J Hodgson
Paea
Horne
Lovegrove
Mika
Subs:
Walker
Withers
Cox
Beaumont
Alex Brown unlucky to be left out, but Disco Dave has to play for nostalgic reasons.

See it slightly differently, think you'll see Eden in there, not sure i would but have a feeling he will leave Salter out and go with Hall in the centre, the pace with George would be key. Be harsh on Salter as he has been playing well, but Hall has to play.
Wouldnt start with Micky, bring him on when they tire a bit, we are generally ok for the first 15mins say. After that we go to pot, so need to have that motivation. Having Evarn back is a boost for sure. Horne and Lovegrove ive no issues with in the second row. Bench looks light but we dont have too much else to choose from. Believe Griffin has an injury? or id have him above Cox all day long.

| The only problem for me with having Tui back is it took him god knows how long to get up to speed before his injury. Will it be the same after the injury.
We need our forwards to stand up to theres or it will be a long afternoon.
