If Tomkins was faking then he missed his vocation and should have been a Hollywood star. His eyes were open without blinking with his pupils dilated, he made no effort to protect his head from striking the ground, and he didn't so much as twitch during or immediately after the faceplant. He was out like a light.

Also as pointed out, why would he leave the field for the rest of the game?
