They are vastly over rated, you know.

In a way he is right, they are over talked about, especially by fans who think they matter more than anything.

If you played 5 drives and a kick with no errors for 40 minutes you would be lucky to score a try but would finish the half with a 100% completion rate, providing there was a QF at the end of the set.

But you can make errors, kick on the full and still be winning. For example Featherstone won yesterday, 10-56 I think it was, winning 30 odd 4 at half time. The completion rates from memory were about 55% first half and 68% second half.
That is a disgusting completion rate in the eyes of most people but if you look at the QF's and the reason for the errors then a whole new outlook is clear.

Agar may be cltching at straws but he is right, most people banging on about completion rates dont fully understand why coaches need to see them and the fact there are more stats that need to be used in conjunction to get any benefit.

It depends on who says it tbh.
If Any of the top 6 came out with that comment then you would probably say 'thats fair enough as they are obviously doing enough in other areas'
But when it comes from an apparent clueless coach who's team couldn't complete if their lives depended on it and are sat 3rd from botton with only the two cannon fodder teams below them then its obviously the ramblings of a mad man who realises he is way out of his depth.
Ditto his comment about playing in hot weather and wet weather in the same inverview!

In a way I can see the point that completion rates in isolation are not that important. For instance when saints are on top of there game and start playing the Harlem globetrotters stuff they are capable of (or were capable of a year or two ago) then putting the ball down a bit is an acceptable byproduct of the expansive game.

Whereas when you play the up the jumper 5 drives and a kick stuff Agar aspires to and still can't complete you're sets then completion rates are very important.

I could use our game this week and the one coming up at the weekend.m We played a saints team that the best way to beat is to keep the ball out of there hands, not sure of completion rate but it must have been in the 90%+ region and the scoreline reflected this. At the weekend when we play Salford I would expect we'd be more expansive and have a slightly lower completion rate as we would see Salford as a team of lesser ability and as long as we don't have rates of 50% we would expect to win.

FC on te other hand are having a torrid time of it and most teams would be expecting to beat them as there confidence is so low, I would expect them to have it drilled into them to retain the ball and 'do the basics right' therefore completion rates are paramount.

Gordon is spot on, Salford are more than capable of turning us over if we do not turn up with the right attitude. Salford are a capable side that have beaten Saints and Leeds themselves this season.
