Panzano is a little town in Italy that has a brilliant butcher called Dario Cecchini. I love airports but only really for what they represent, ie the start of a holiday. The rest of it is awful. The families who insist that ALL FIVE members have to stand adjacent to the baggage carousel. No, just one is enough, everyone else to stand at a reasonable distance, please. The surge forward when the gate comes up on the screen or they call boarding. And people boarding without their row being called. Intending to get a full English breakfast, then getting stuck in queue behind 27 fat lads in Hawaiian shirts at 6.30am all going on a stag do to Prague and needing something to soak the Carlsberg up with. Taking your shoes off to go through the scanner. And the water thing. It's like some sort of test to see whether you really want to go or not.

I've developed a kind of trance like state to block as much of it out as possible. Otherwise I can get really wound up and then start endlessly whining. This is obviously not great fun for Ms. Terrorist.

Technology has vastly improved things as far as diversion tactics go. As well as the trusty book and MP3 player, I've now got backgammon and The Independent app (which is excellent, find a wi-fi spot and it will down load and save all the paper so you can read it without being connected) on my phone. An e reader at Christmas and I reckon I'll have it down.

A new positive is that if you've got a biometric passport you can now go through the automatic barriers and miss the immigration queues.

The worst possible news, and put over clinically and heartlessly, although i can't imagine a nice way of putting it over.
