Obst and Cooke look like the makings of a decent partnership; a runner and a creator. I don't think Rovers even used Cooke to half his ability, but as I've said before he did the simple things right and we've missed that at 6 since he's gone.
Important we fill that role for next year, but even more important we get someone who will compliment Dobson.

yep, just before he kicked off on the full and had a dodgy 2nd half. Typical Cooke jeckyll and Hyde performance.
I'd be more than happy with a good British 6 coming in and keep the quota we have. Dobbo will see his contract out then wfhich would suit all parties.

RFL "RELAX" RESTRICTIONS ON EXISTING OVERSEAS PLAYERS:
The RFL has now announced that clubs will be able to renew or extend the contracts of non-federation players who were signed before the rule was changed in June 2007.
Those players can be retained on top of the non-federation players that clubs are allowed, though the new dispensation will expire if players switch clubs or at the end of any contract extension.
***
SUPER LEAGUE CLUBS AGREE EXTENSION:
Tuesday 21st October 08
After consultation with engage Super League clubs at this week’s end of season meeting, the RFL board has approved an extension to a recent exemption to the club trained rules.
At the meeting held in Harrogate, engage Super League clubs unanimously agreed that the club trained rules should remain and that a number of players registered in the competition prior to the adoption of the club trained rules should count as federation trained players.
Clubs also agreed that any legal case brought against the RFL for introducing such rules should be defended vigorously.
Rod Findlay, the RFL’s in-house lawyer said: “The club trained rules were introduced at the start of the year to increase the number of home produced players in the top flight. Clubs are fully behind these rules and reaffirmed their support this week.
“What this extension does is accommodate those players who have made a career in the game before they were aware of the possibility of club trained rules. Long term once the people qualify for the current exemption retire the club trained rules will do what they were designed to do and that is bring through more home grown talent.”
[size=150To take advantage of the extension of the exemption a player must apply to the RFL to be ‘federation trained’ at the end of their current contract. They also must have registered with the RFL prior to 1 February 2008, the date when the club trained rules were introduced.[/[/sizeb
Their status as a federation trained will then apply throughout their career, even if they move clubs in the future. '"
This is the key part isn’t it?
As far as I can see all of our overseas players other than Dobson & Clinton fall into this category.
A few successful applications for exemption & we could have plenty of space on the quota.

Fed-trained solved - but that still leaves quota. I think fed-trained quota players count still count as overseas. So, they need an EU passport too. However, they [ucould[/u be phasing out the quota rule, as the fed-trained quota player shouldn't be an issue in the future, as they retire.
It isn't just a case of the overseas quota coming down - in a belt and braces approach, the club- and fed-trained minimums also increase. From next year on it is.
Top 25 earners:
Club-trained - minimum of 8. Fed-trained - minimum of 20-club trained number (most likely 20-8=12 for Rovers). Overseas - maximum of 5.
Possibly...
8 Club-trained - Lovegrove, Watts, Welham, Taylor, I'anson (?), Bell (?), 2 of Spaven, Mariano, Latus Bros and Beaumont.
12 Fed-trained - Hodgson (who'll be 21), Fisher, Vella, Briscoe, Cook, Fox, Colbon (fingers crossed), Cockayne, Ratu, Murrell, Galea (???), Netherton. Leaving no room for Walker or Wheeldon or a new stand-off (?!). When you think we've got Mills and had Cooke at the start of the year, I don't see how we meet the current quotas. There was the theory that one of Wheeldon or Murrell was given a club-trained dispensation. I wonder if the rule has been phased in more gently for us. To go from essentially zero club-trained in 2007 to almost a third of the squad by 2011 was always going to be tough.
5 Overseas - Newton, Clinton, Dobson, Webster, +1 ?
Tbh, sticking to the rules I think it is an insouble riddle. I think we must have a dispensation - not on overseas, but on fed-trained. Probably needed it, too.

| So let me see if I have this right, if a overseas player who doesnt count on the quota I:E Euro passport or Kolpak, he can get will not count as a non fed player is he signed before the June 2007, is OOC and stays at the same club?
So thats means
Dobson
Newton
Clinton
Galea
Webster are all quota players
Fisher will count on the above rules.
What about Vella did he sign before June 2007? What is he classed as?

Vella will be non-quota and fed-trained, IMO (which even I don't set a lot of store by on this subject!). The contract renewal thing was quietly dropped later I think - hence Willie Manu coming off this year, instead of next when his new contract starts. If Galea has also gets a Maltese passport and counts as fed-trained, he becomes a much more attractive proposition - for other clubs too.
If they stick with this system, it'll sort itself out in the next few years. Until then

The delay in James Webster making his Hull FC debut was due to him waiting for his UK passport iirc. Vella getting his Maltese passport was flagged as being significant at the time, too. As you say, it'd be difficult to discriminate.

British, Maltese, French, Polish or any other EU passport is treated exactly the same within EU law. The RFL would be getting into a legal minefield if they said Webster was ok to play as an Aussie on a British passport, but A N Other was barred with a passport issued elswhere in the EU.
The rules governing our game are basically an agreement, but it would NOT stop the EU from clamping down on the RFL if it sees a restriction of trade being built into its rules.

wasn't that to do with Webster going from quota to non fed?
Even I'm confused now!

| Out - Wheeldon (no reason ), Ratu, Briscoe, Galea, maybe Webster , hopefully Dobson, i`Anson..
In - Lovegrove (2 years of mediocrity), Lovegrove (2 years of mediocrity) so good i said it twice , Lovegrove, Vella, Clinton (on an extra £100,000...get that people...an EXTRA £100,000....)..is he worth £20,000...we could have signed Morley, Burgess, Carvell...even Len Casey, Mark Broadhurst and Zook Ema for those wages...
Are the board, coach, chairman, "radio journalista" (in the loosest terms)..., completely divorced from reality...apparently so...
We are heading fast down a path to eternal mediocrity..who can save us..certainly not our adopted Sydneysider chairman...or our amatuer level coach....or our cricket playing Aussies on their holidays..or our local "sunday pretend journalists"...
Oh, for a real journalist in East Yorkshire...you could really make a name...

You're right bundle of laughs aren't you!!!!
So you seriously think that we'd be better without Dobson?
You've also got insider knowledge into Clintons wages, which is good and he's getting an extra £100,000 a year, so working on that he must have come in on £100+ you're saying he'll be on £200+ a year next year. If you believe that you are away with the fairies.
Justin Morgan is an amatuer coach? The same one that got us to a challenge cup semi as an NL1 club, then got us promited, then against all odds kept us i SL, managed a 7th place finish the year after that and got us up to 4th the year after.... oh and we're having a mediocre one this year therefore he's crap.... So rather than slag off what we have and using your massive rugby knowledge who do you think we should have as chairman, coach, and half backs?

That's not what he's saying at all. Do you have the memory span of a goldfish?
There was much talk in the press (local and national) of Rovers having salary cap problems bringing Clinton in, consequently he didn't play the first few rounds. There was also much talk of his contract being loaded financially to years 2 and 3 to fit him in this year. So Larry could be implying, for example, that Clinton is on £30k this year and £130k next year. He was the highest paid forward at Brisbane, he won't be coming for peanuts.

Nope not the memory span of a goldfish, I remember Clinton was on a reported £125k in the NRL, now I would assume he hasn't took a years pay drop of £95K with the promise of a contract or £130k this year. If he has had it back loaded as reported I would be shocked if it was anything like £100k as that would mean we are either paying him peanuts this year or Matt Orford money next, I would think neither are true.

This "Much talk" you speak of was mainly on here, and mainly from Hull fans such as yourself. I'm sure you will have links to the vault full of facts to verify all the above?
The only fact is the salary he was on at the Broncos, a salary that had 1 year only left to run.

| I am of course referring to the back loading as Mrs B has garnered....
Anybody really, really think Big Joel is worth an internationals , world class players wages...??? Good player he is, but yet another blot on our salary cap situation i am afraid...JM has clearly not mastered this most important of modern day skills...
With regards the ins....you can add a hooker and a centre....Owen is dependent on his recovery..he may well be asked to spend a further season at Cas to prove he is " as was "

So you think Cas will offer him a one year deal which he will sign, to stay at Cas to prove he is good enough to sign for Rovers the following season.
