I agree he should train with the first team that goes without saying. But he will not progress in the reserves, the standard is dire. He should go out on loan for a month to a NL1 club like maybe Sheffield or Fev which is close to Hull. The tougher, physical aspect of NL rugby will do more for him than a season in the reserves/acadamy.
