| Quote ="Wanderer"Had a very nice pint of Old Bear Brewery (Keighley) Hibernator 5.0% last Sunday in the Fox & Goose at Hebden Bridge ... a lovely ruby red malty winter warmer.
Also dropped in at the wonderful Old Bridge Inn at Ripponden ... the only down side being my choice of drink. Went for John Eastwood Best Bitter but in all honesty it was a golden IPA and not what I would call a Best.'"
Indeed....
Quote Session or ordinary bitter
Strength up to 4.1% abv. The majority of British beers with the name IPA will be found in this group, such as Greene King IPA, Deuchars IPA, Flowers IPA, Wadworth Henrys Original IPA, etc. Though bearing the name IPA, these session bitters are not as strong and hoppy as an India Pale Ale would be in the USA and elsewhere. IPAs with modest gravities (below 1040ยบ) have been brewed in Britain since at least the 1920s.[4 This is the most common strength of bitter sold in British pubs. It accounts for 16.9% of pub sales.[5'"
Some IPAs are however Best bitter, those between 4.2% ABV and 4.7% ABV.
Best of course being a strength, not a quality.
But you knew that.
People who go into a pub and order a pint of Best bitter often are just saying it thinking it means finest ... and it doesn't.

| Sampled the Pivni house ale brewed by Thornbridge yesterday at the World Beer Freehouse in York and also a pint of Wadworth 6x in the Punch Bowl (the one opposite the Yorkshire Terrier - as opposed to the Wetherspoons house).

I read that the Toad Brewery were hoping to open to the public and sell ale on match days ... sometime in the future.
That would be Rovers match days I presume.
They also get their water from their own borehole.

| Visited the Black Lion at Firbeck yesterday. The owner bought the pub from Punch Taverns last year and it shows. Five ales on of which two were from microbreweries and some stonkingly good fare to boot. Pub was full on a Wednesday evening, which says something when they're out in the sticks. Both beers I had were in good form, Bryson's Hurricane Bitter and Westgate ( Greene King ) Bonkers Conkers.

| I note that the entries for Doncaster town centre in the 2011 Good Beer Guide remain the same as for 2010;
Corner Pin
Gatehouse
Plough
Red Lion
Salutation
Tut 'n' Shive
Good to see the Toad Brewery in there.

| Some toads:-
Fowler Toad, Common Toad, American Toad, Fire-Bellied Toad, and Barn Toad.
Can't see the first two being a hit ... but Fire-Bellied Toad looks perfect for a brew.

| Been to Huntingdon and Cambridge ... thank goodness there are two Wetherspoons in Cambridge to at least aleviate the gloom of high prices and lifeless beer.
I got fed up of asking folk to try to put a head on the beer and supped lager instead ... hopeless.
However we stopped at Oakham (Rutland) on the way back and called in the Wheatsheaf near the Church and the posh Oakham independent school (Annual fees range from ยฃ13,560 to ยฃ25,050) and had two of the best pints of properly conditioned ale ... Everards Tiger (4.2%ABV) ... simply superb, particularly after all the shoite I'd had served up farther south.

Good point!
We have a games day each year, basically an excuse for boozing hidden behind a thin veil of competition. Used to have it at The Fitzwilliam Arms until someone got macheted and it shut. Last year was the the trades and labour club but they cant get us in this year. Just after a town centre-ish pub with a room we can have to ourselves

Used to venture in from work and have used the room to the left of the bar for meetings on occasion. Would be ok for 20 people (although I might change my mind once I find out what games you play) - it's basicly an old-style 'snug'.
