| Went to Brigantes in York yesterday afternoon (part of the Market Town Taverns chain). Sampled several pints of Leeds Pale. Excellent stuff from a consistently excellent brewery (and pub chain come to that).

| Elland Lock Keeper and Springhead Barebones in the Gatehouse on Friday evening prior to the game. Slight preference was for the Elland brew.

| On tour on Saturday evening ...
Cottage Somerset and Dorest Ale in the Market Hotel in Elsecar
Northumberland Pit Pony in the Horseshoe Inn in Harley and
Batemans XB in the George & Dragon at Wentworth.
The Cottage Ale was a lovely malty deep red ale and was probably my personal favourite of the evening. The Pit Pony, another which I had not tasted before was a floral / hoppy bitter, amber in colour.
I am pretty sure that the Batemans will not need an introduction.

Had two Barebones on Friday night then two Abbot Ales.
Abbot was the winner by a mile.

Not a surprise, always a winner Abbot - The Abbot Reserve is even better though!

| Had a pint of the interestingly named Old Umpire (Marstons) followed by a pint of Sneck Lifter (Jennings) with Sunday Lunch at the Elm Tree, Heath in Derbyshire. Superb Carvery - well worth a visit. Just a mile from M1 Junction 29.

| Satanic Mills by Wells is a very good porter and available from Asda. I haven't tried their Burning Gold yet, but my son tells me it's a fine summer ale.
All the best for Sunday. I hope it's a great advertisement for the sport and I know the supporters of both teams will be the usual advertisement for sportsmanship we always see in this game.

Would you be Mark Burton yourself then? You intimated that there might be an ale on from a local brewery at the Keepmoat some time in the future, so I've put two and two together.
Whatever...please pass on my best wishes for the resounding success of this venture.
Moving on. I unfortunately couldn't make it to Blackpool this weekend with my family commitments but it sounds like we acquitted ourselves well despite the result.
I stumbled upon the Derbyshire CAMRA pub of the year 2008, the Arkwright Arms in Duckmanton. They have no less than 14 handpumps on the bar together with at least 6 real ciders and two perries!
I sampled Batemans' Valiant, Thornbridge Kipling and one called Hophead, all of which I would revisit. The menu was very reasonably priced ( kids' meals only £1.95! ).
Definitely worth a moment of your time, if you're out that way. It's less than a mile from the new 29A Junction of the M1 on the A632 between Bolsover and Chesterfield.

Teaser . With my unfortunate OCD, which is supping as many different types of real ale as I can manage, I look forward to tasting the all-new Thorne brews. Although much-maligned, I did enjoy one or two cracking pints of Darley's at the Crooked Billet in Owston Ferry a decade or so back.

| A couple of pints of Lancaster Bomber in the Parkfield Inn (200 yds from the ground) before kick-off. Passed a Joseph Holt house (1/2mile away) which I will try to visit next time we're out that way.

Joey Holt's? Have supped many a pint of their beers in Manchester and Bury over the years. Excellent brews and like gold-dust outside of Manchester.
Today, have supped the cheesily-monickered- but-eminently-drinkable Wim-Bull-Don ( Bradfield ) at the Bluecoat.
Can any Roughyed advise on the best real-ale establishments in the area, please?

For my money the best real ale pub in Oldham is the Ashton Arms
on Clegg Street at the side of the bus turminus, It as many real ales
on at very reasonable prices, ie around £2 a pint and less.

Any thoughts on the Clayton Arms which appears to be close to the Ground and gets a mention on the local CAMRA list?
