As a Norfolk lad the Yorky lingo can be quite challenging at times. Post Office Road never ceases to amaze me, a friendly enough bunch but it would be great to be able to understand what they are actually saying !

Well, 'mardle' in Norfolk is to talk or rabbit-on so maybe 'mardy' is a corruption of mardle. Does 'mardy' mean being talkative or chatty where you are ?

Correct. In the days of kitchen ranges they were cleaned by applying black lead which was then polished until it shone. Thank goodness for electric/gas cookers
