I had some 'Junglejuice' in the Gatehouse the other day, tasted like oil but i had a second helping!!

The Last Drop Inn on Colliergate and the Yorkshire Terrier are also York Brewery pubs with the latter sitting behind the York Brewery Shop on Stonegate.

Another little gem in York is the Blue Bell on Fossgate which always reminds me of how the Mason's used to be in Doncaster (if you get in there you'll understand what I mean). It usually has half a dozen real ales available with regulars including Adnams Broadside and Timothy Taylor Landlord.

I wouldn't base too much credence on what it says in the GBG anyway. I've been to many a listed pub only to be disappointed.

Incidentally, there's a Thornbridge Brewery, Meet The Brewer Night at the Bluecoat in Rotherham on 8th May. Me and my good lady will be there sampling the Jaipur (hideously strong and very drinkable IPA) amongst others.

For a couple of quid by train, it would be well worth your while. Hair of the dog after the York trip

If you see it out and about, try a pint of Barnstormer on draught. If you like a drop of lighter ale, Brains FA is worth trying. That's from Morrisons. I haven't seen it anywhere else.

If you get chance sample the Birds and Bees from York brewery. They had some on at The Eagle and Child at Auckley the other week, 4.3% and I thought an excellent warm weather ale.

Visited the Yorkshire Terrier and the 'Wonky Donkey' yesterday but didn't see any Birds and Bees, just Guzzler and Yorkshire Terrier. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

Had a pint of Yorkshire Terrier on Saturday night at the Rockingham Arms in Wentworth ( not my choice, a wedding wake, sorry, reception took me there unfortunately - much prefer the George and Dragon, both for the ambience and the beer! ) which was pretty decent.

Since then I've sampled Eastwood and Sanders' Nettlethrasher, Kelham Island White Rider ( the best wheat beer I've tasted so far! ) and Saltaire Blonde ( like Acorn, a brewery that rarely brews a bad one ).

I agree, the George over the Rock every time!

Have taken the liberty of sampling the Thornbridge brews prior to the official tasting tonight. I can confirm that, given the opportunity, I would sample all the "offending" brews again i.e. Wild Swan, Lord Marples, Ashford, Martius and the aforementioned Jaipur.

Supped Oakham, Bishop's Farewell ( a very nice flowery brew! ), a couple of pints of Wentworth's Speckled Wood ( lots of malt and caramel in the taste, quite sweet and very moreish, hence the two pints! ) and the strangely metallic tasting Bradfield's Steelers ( quite ironic really

).

Enjoyed a pint of Bath Ales Barnstormer in the Salutation last weekend. It's not dis-similar to Adnams Broadside which I really like.

Went round Saltaire brewery last night. Sampled their dark mild, blonde & Cascade pale ale. The latter was my favourite so partook in a few more of them. Afterwards we went to Wetherspoons in Shipley, tried the Saltaire Blackberry Cascade; don't let the name put you off - it doesn't look like lager & black from your school days, nor taste of it, a really nice pale ale.

The best beer ive ever tasted, was at the Salutation, (When it first became a festival ale house) so I must be talking 13 or 14 years ago.

It was a beer called WHITBY WOBBLE. I was working there at the time, and after every shift I was having a few of those. The landlady at the time tried her hardest to get the beer back on, but without avail. Looks like it was a one off special beer.

If anyone ever sees it anywhere, give me a shout and i'll be in that pub in a flash!

The Whitby Brewery and it's successor the Black Dog Brewery are no more so I doubt you'll ever see Whitby Wobble again.

I'm sure that Cropton have brewed one or two in the Black Dog range in the past, so who knows?

Just returned from the infamous Fighting Cock having sampled 3 pints of excellent Yorkshire Dales Settle-Carlisle porter. 4.6% I think. Quite exquisite. Productivity down to zero at my desk now.

No Rugby Sunday, so spent the day in Newark and visited all 5 pubs listed in the current Good Beer Guide.

The Fox and Crown is well worth a visit with a number of Castle Rock beers available but top marks goes to The Crown and Mitre, a nice pint of Bombadier and a superb Sunday Lunch (recommended).

Have just supped two splendid pints of Spire Sovereign IPA and a pint of their Land of Hop and Glory ( no spelling mistake

) . Proof positive that there are two excellent breweries in Staveley, Townes and Spire. Some achievement for a small town in Chesterfield



On Saturday, "happened" to be in the vicinity of the White Hart at West Stockwith and sampled Idle Cricketer and Idle Landlord, both very tasty and moreish.

This Friday and Saturday Keighley and District CAMRA have their second SKIPTON BEER FESTIVAL. Skipton is surprisingly easy to get to via train. A service runs every 20 mins from Leeds.
