The whole of the pitch was prone to water logging it got worse when they built the Morrisons Supermarket on York Rd it did vastly improve when they relayed the pitch & installed a new drainage system during the John Desmond era.
I wish I had a pound for every gallon of water I have pumped off the pitch one year it was so bad I got an helicopter to fly up & down over the pitch to help dry the pitch out & disperse the surface water so the important game against Sheffield Eagles went ahead.

| The whole Marshgate area was flooded following the 1946/47 winter which was why they built those flood relief channels. I don't think they ever really solved the problem though. That must be just about the lowest point in Doncaster and there only needs to be excess water flowing into the Don from the hills around Sheffield for the problem to recur though I think the Don is in a slightly deeper channel there now.

| I remember helping to put seats in at the Greyhound stadium. They came from Belle Vue, some still bearing the names of Rovers directors.

Yes there is a pub called the Cheswold in the Doncaster leisure park but the answer I'm looking for is more not a pub or a building.
I think the source of the River Cheswold is somewhere around the Marshgate area.

I have an 1849 map of Doncaster showing the Cheswold running from the Don somewhere near where the prison is now, parallel with the old Great North Road in Crimpsall (Marshgate) to and across the canal. It then passes under the railway line where it turns sharply east and flows under Frenchgate near the old Greyfriars Road baths past St George's church and rejoins the canal near Low Fishergate. There is no indication of a source.

All we need now is the reason why Cheswold was synonymous with something in Doncaster

Well done Stand-Offish the Cheswold motor car was built between 1911-1915 by E.W. Jackson & Son at Frenchgate Doncaster they also built ambulances on the same site, the car had a four cylinder 2612cc engine which along with the gearbox was also manufactured on site
Doncaster Museum have a Cheswold car on display.
