Rip tony, a very good chairman and very approachable, always had time for a chat and really was as passionate as any fan.

That's absolutely true mate.. a Coventry gent who took the club to his heart!!

Just to add as well that he always came down to the club after the match to face the fans during his tenure.. regardless of whether they were good, bad or terrible and never shirked what he saw as his responsibility.

RIP and my thoughts go out to his family at this time.

So, so sorry to hear this. Tony was a true gentleman who led the Widnes club through some stormy seasons and back to the top flight. Always remeber partying with him and his wife in Top of the Town after that first game in Super League against St. Helens. He gave his club tie away to a lad who asked for it on the dancefloor.

He never ducked any questions from the fans and always came on the message board win or lose. And when he sold his control of the club to Stephen Vaughan it was for the better of the club. He will be missed by everyone at the club. My heart goes out to his family.

This is very sad news.

Good on him for all he has done for the club. RIP.

I'm absolutely Gutted to hear this news. Tony was a rock for Widnes during some very hard years. He worked so hard and pumped a lot of his own time and money into this club. He was, as has already been stated, a very affable and approachable man and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. I've even swapped pm's with him on the Widnes messageboard - how many chairmen would do that?

The next time I go and take my seat in the South Stand of our wonderful stadium, I'll reflect on just how much work Tony put in to help make this happen. The great youth system we now have was put in place under his stewardship and I'll always thank him for the 4 years of SL RL I enjoyed, thanks in most part, to his efforts off the field.

Very sad news - he was extremely approachable and was always willing to face the fans, even when things were'nt going very well.


I dont think Widnes Vikings would exist today if it was'nt for his efforts.

I'd have thought there would have been a thread on VT about this also. He was a Rugby League man also not just Widnii.

I would like to add my condolences to Tony's family and to the Widnes club.

Of all the Rugby League club Chairman I ever dealt with, Tony was one of the most genuinely enthusiastic both for his club and for Rugby League as a whole. He was a fierce defender of Widnes, but was always ready to talk about how much the club meant to him. Given that he wasn't a native of Widnes, he had the zeal of a convert. He was a genuinely decent bloke for whom the fans were very important.
