| Quote ="Robbo4"The cap is live so we must have had the cap space to pay both Raynor and King in full. As we havent brought anyone in, that money should be available for next season. That combined wage should be enough to bring in one top signing and if we lose a few players then we should have enough cap space to bring in another top signing.'"
I'm not sure we did have enough cap space to pay both King and Raynor in full. I believe the club were expecting Raynor's court case to take place last September/October. When it became apparent that it was going to drag on until April/May they decided to get rid of him, which they did in January/February(?). If the cap wasn't an issue why didn't they keep him on until he went to court? We could certainly have done with him due to Calderwood's injuries and he did a decent job at Crusaders.

IIRC contracts run from November so we were paying Raynor from November onwards. As the cap is live we had to have enough space to pay him the full amount if needed. I think we released him because of the strength of the case against him and that coupled with his previous suspended sentence the club wanted to distance themselves from him.
Are you really suggesting we were in pre-season already over the salary cap so just decided to get rid of Raynor?

Raynor appeared in court in mid September 2009 when the trial date was set for April. He was released by Hull in December.

As you said earlier, the cap is live. We could not spend over it. We may not even have paid Raynor or King in full for the remainder of their deals. We could well have compromised at 75% for example. As you say though, whatever we did pay the both of them comes off 2010 cap but will be free to spend elsewhere in 2011.

No but I think its possible that the club thought that his court case would be resolved earlier than it was and that recruitment and contract negotiations last summer may have been conducted in the belief that Raynor was not going to be available this season.
Remember that at the time his contract was terminated he had pleaded not guilty. Also how would the club know anything about the "strength of the case against him"?

I believe the legal counsel involved gave the club and Raynor an early indication of what they believed the outcome was going to be.
His contract was terminated by mutual consent with the pay off going onto the cap. Raynor will have taken the payoff otherwise we could have simply dismissed him without payoff once he was sent down. It was a win win move for the club and a decent move for the player that knew prison was a severe reality.

I don't believe that either of them was paid in full but think if they had been we may have been over the cap.
The money we have saved will be available for next season. Obviously we don't know what they were on but I should have thought it could be £120-£150K for the pair of them.

We wouldnt have been over the cap. The RFL would have stopped that with a live cap. If you have a player on your books who you owe 100k to over the next 12 months you need to keep 100k spare to be able to pay that. If we had 90k spare putting us 10k over the RFL would have stopped us putting that contract in place in the first place. I'd have though nearer to the 150k+ will have been freed up for next year.

Makes you wonder how warrington play there cap as the quality players they have signed and the reported monies they are on surely they must be over. Or are they bending the rules to the extreme

WTF does grammar have to do with anything? I was merely commenting on the fact that you said "I'm afraid" three times in the same sentence. Perhaps you need to stop taking yourself so seriously.

The HDM reported at the time of the contract termination that Raynor was on £90k.

No matter what the club thought might happen, the RFL wouldn't have allowed us to discount his salary for cap purposes

Well if Raynor was on £90k I reckon King must have been on about £50K which would give us £140k to play with for next season.
